its radar system are performing nominally. Six of the seven STARCALS (star calibrations) were successful, with attitude updates averaging 0.05 degree. Most of the spacecraft temperatures have leveled off, but the gyroscope temperatures are again showing a slow increase. The current rate of increase is 1/3 of a degree (Centigrade) per day, with a peak at 69.2 degrees C. Yesterday, the upload of specific data patterns for Test #3 of Flight Tape Recorder "A" was accomplished. The playback of the test patterns will be performed on Wednesday, February 27. Later today, the T1054 command sequence update (or "Tweak") and associated parameter files will be sent to Magellan. ___ _____ ___ /_ /| /____/ \ /_ /| Ron Baalke | baalke@mars.jpl.nasa.gov | | | | __ \ /| | | | Jet Propulsion Lab | Is it mind over matter, ___| | | | |__) |/ | | |___ M/S 301-355 | or matter over mind? /___| | | | ___/ | |/__ /| Pasadena, CA 91109 | Never mind. |_____|/ |_|/ |_____|/ | It doesn't matter. ------------------------------ Date: 23 Feb 91 19:21:11 GMT From: unmvax!nmt.edu!pahsnsr@ucbvax.Berkeley.EDU (Paul A. Houle) Subject: Re: Terraforming, sun shield Actually, one of the better options is to seed the upper atmosphere of Venus with submicron size particles -- the idea is to engineer 'smart' macromolecules (very primitive nanomachines - anything too sophisticated will probably be scrambled by UV radiation) and seed them in the stratosphere. They should stay up for better than ten years - and if you've got good control of transmission/scattering and absorbtion, it should be possible to cause a 'reverse greenhouse effect' - changing Venus's atmosphere into something transparent to heat would help alot too... The more that we look into atmospheric science, the more we realize that planetary parameters (size, distance from sun) don't matter as much as composition effects. The greenhouse effect is probably the best-known such effect. ------------------------------ Date: 23 Feb 91 18:14:30 GMT From: pa.dec.com!shodha.enet.dec.com!thewav.enet.dec.com!pflueger@decwrl.dec.com (Free speech is a sound investment) Subject: Background on the Monuments of Mars (was re: Martian mystery?) If your interested in more background about this subject, you might pick up a copy of "The Monuments of Mars" by Richard Hoagland. I read it last summer and found it to be quite interesting. Ricard Hoagland is also a frequent guest on a radio show (on the Sun Radio Net- work) called "For The People". He's usually a guest on the Friday edition of the show. He's also involved in something called the "Interprise Project" which is an effort, in cooperation with NASA I believe, to give High Schooler's hands on education about the space program. *- --*-- -* Jim Pflueger | pflueger@thewav.enet.dec.com DEC Enterprise Integration Services| !decwrl!thewav.enet!pflueger Costa Mesa, California | "Take Kuwait Back! - Go Troops!" *- --*-- -* ------------------------------ Date: 23 Feb 91 23:28:54 GMT From: pacific.mps.ohio-state.edu!linac!uwm.edu!wuarchive!cs.utexas.edu!news-server.csri.toronto.edu!utzoo!henry@tut.cis.ohio-state.edu (Henry Spencer) Subject: Re: Navstar GPS Constellation Status (91-02-22) In article LANG@UNB.CA (Richard Langley) writes: >6.
