---------------------- Gamma Satellite Launched ------------------------ On July 11th the Soviet Union launched a scientific research satellite named Gamma (90058A, 20683). The following information is from the 1989 Soviet Year In Space (Teledyne Brown Engineering), p. 72. Gamma will detect radiation in the 50 MeV to 5 GeV range. The 7,300 kg, 7.7 m long, 2.7 m wide spacecraft with solar panels stretching nearly 12 m is based on Soyuz/Progress support systems. The scientific instruments have a mass of 2,000 kg, three fourths of which is the Gamma-1 telescope. Other main instruments are the Disk (0.1 - 8 MeV) and the Pulsar X-2 (3 - 25 KeV) telescopes. Its relatively large size and low orbit should make Gamma an easy to observe, naked eye object. On favourable passes, it will probably be about visual magnitude 2.5. Observation reports would be appreciated. Secret Titan 4 Payload Found ---------------------------- On June 8th, at 05:22 UTC, the U.S. Air Force launched its second Titan 4 rocket, carrying a classified DoD payload called USA 59 (90050A, 20641). In an unusual move for a such a payload, the DoD announced that it had been launched into a 52 deg inclination. No other details of the orbit or payload were released. A rocket body was also catalogued by NORAD (20642). Thanks to the efforts of Russell Eberst, of Scotland, the payload and rocket body have been found, and preliminary orbits have been computed. He found USA 59 on 16 June, and USA 59 r on 18 June. His observations were of such high quality that accurate preliminary elements were easily calculated. Further obs by Mr. Eberst and several N. American observers have resulted in the above elements. USA 59 is in a 455 km high orbit, inclined at 61 deg to the equator. USA 59 r, is in a 251 km orbit, also inclined at 61 deg. There are several interesting features of USA 59's orbit. First, its 61 deg inclination is at variance with DoD's claim of 52 degrees. Second, its plane is only 3 deg east of Lacrosse, which is very close. Third, USA 59's plane is precessing westward at almost exactly the same rate as Lacrosse (within 0.015 deg/d), suggesting that it is intended to remain in an orbit near coplanar with Lacrosse. USA 59 r's lower orbit results in a faster westward precession of its plane than that of USA 59. I estimate that they were coplanar for about 4.3 d after launch, until about 14:00 UTC on 12 June, which is the probable time that USA 59 manoeuvred to its present orbit. It is interesting to note that reporters at the Cape say that the launch was 7 minutes late due to a weather delay. In that time, the Earth's rotation carried the launch pad about 1.77 deg further east of Lacrosse's plane. Assuming that Lacrosse's plane was USA 59's target, then remaining in the 251 km orbit for 4.3 d after launch, was almost exactly the correct amount of time required to make up the 1.77 deg difference caused by the launch delay. The last known sighting of USA 59 was early on 19 June UTC. Since then observers have not been able to find it in or near the predicted path at the predicted times. It is suspected that it has adjusted its orbit. It is hoped that a thorough search of the orbit will reult in recovery of the satellite. Observers who wish to assist in the search for USA 59, should download FINDS36P.ZIP from the CSS BBS. Sections 4.0 and 5.0 explain how to conduct a search, and the type and quality of observations that are required. Report any observations of USA 59 and USA 59 r to Ted Molczan at the CSS BBS, at the number given in the header above. Leave a private message if you are "shy" about discussing classified objects. Note: The object is still missing as of 14 July 1990. Pageos Fragments and Solar Radiation Pressure --------------------------------------------- Pageos (PAssive GEOdetic Satellite) was launched in 1966 to support geophysical research. It was a 30 m diameter, 55 kg, aluminum coated, mylar balloon, inflated in orbit. It was used as a reference point in the sky for the measurement of distances on the Earth's surface. Survey teams separated by thousands of kilometers made simultaneous photographs of the satellite against the stars, which enabled the distance between their observation sites to be accurately determined. Pageos' huge size and highly reflective surface made it an easy 2nd magnitude object, despite its initial circular, 4200 km high orbit. Due to its large cross-sectional area and low mass, Pageos' orbit was strongly perturbed (changed) by solar radiation pressure. (Photons exert a small force when they strike an object.) Thus it was studied by scientists who were iterested in this phenomenon. Solar sails, which may one day be used to propell spacecraft throughout the inner solar system, make use of solar radiation pressure. In 1975, Pageos broke up into dozens of pieces, most of which have decayed from orbit. Two large pieces remain in orbit, which can be observed using binoculars. They are 63014DA (5994) and 66056H (8074). (63014DA is a designator for the Midas 6 satellite, incorrectly applied by NORAD to one of the Pageos pieces. Pageos and Midas 6 had very similar initial orbits, and both broke up, creating confusion for NORAD when it came time to catalogue their debris. The confusion might have been lessened if NORAD's orbital analysts had taken into account the strong SRP effects on this object, which is not typical of real Midas 6 debris.) 63014DA and 66056H are now in approximately 1000 km by 7000 km, near polar orbits. Eventually, SRP will push their perigee heights into the upper part of the atmosphere, and they will then quickly decay from orbit. In the meantime they are among the more interesting objects to observe. If you keep a record of their orbital elements over several months, you will see that their inclination, eccentricity and mean motion change. In fact, there are periods when SRP actually causes the orbits to gain altitude! KH-11 Satellites ---------------- KH-11's 84122A, 87090A and 88099A have been recovered, and reasonably current elements are expected to be available through the summer. Their elements can only be maintained through the use of accurate positional observations by amateur observers. Those who are shy about talking about classified objects openly, should consider leaving private messages. NOSS Satellites --------------- I have obtained recent elements for 16 satellites belonging to the U.S. DoD's secret NOSS (Naval Ocean Surveillance Satellite) program. These satellites operate in 3 "constellations" with planes spaced 120 deg around the equator. Four satellites fly in formation in each constellation, a main satellite and three sub-satellites. Seen from the ground, they are spaced only a few degrees apart. The satellites are small and usually rather faint, say about magnitude 7 or 8. However, they have been observed to frequently brighten "spontaneously" to magnitude 2 to 4. One long time observer believes that they periodically deploy solar sails to provide the propulsion required to maintain their precise formation flight. One piece of orbital evidence which may support his theory is that the satellites' orbits become more eccentric with time. That is a well known consequence of solar radiation pressure perturbations. The satellites are believed to use interferometry to locate ships at sea by their radio transmissions. As with the KH-11s and other DoD objects, amateur observations are required (and would be greatly appreciated) to maintain accurate orbital elements. I receive them from several sources, in hard-copy and electronic form. These sources are usually accurate, however, they do not all include all of the original NORAD data. For example, some sources omit the second time derivative of the mean motion, BSTAR, bulletin number and revolution number. Except for BSTAR, these are not serious ommisions. To ensure compatibilty with SGP4 users, missing BSTAR data has been estimated based on the mean motion, XN0 and the first time derivative of the mean motion, XNDT20, using the following formula : BSTAR = XNDT20 / XN0 / C2 / 1.5 where : XN0 and XNDT20 have been converted to units of radians and minutes, as in SGP and SGP4 C2 = value computed during SGP4 initialization Values of BSTAR obtained in this way are usually within about 3% of the original NORAD value. The orbital decay terms produced by NORAD (and others) are often very inaccurate. In most cases, it is possible to make more accurate predictions by using average values. Most of the elements in the N2L-XXX.ZIP files have mean values for the first time derivative of the mean motion and BSTAR. The exceptions are satellites which make large manouevers or are greatly affected by solar radiation pressure, which can more than offset drag. The average drag terms are obtained as follows.
