HR2674 would require the federal government to purchase space transportation services, including launch services, on a commercial basis. Certain exceptions are allowed. For example, because of national security concerns, some DoD hardware may not be placed on commercial launches. Send me email me for more information. Also, I've heard that many former astronauts and comsmonauts go on to administrative positions in their respective administrations. Off hand I can think of Don Ellis and Richard Truly, and Vladimir Dzhanibekhov and Alexei Leonov. Any others? The SRBs use ammonium perchlorate (NH4ClO4) plus aluminum powder and a synthetic rubber. The SSMEs burn liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen. The small maneuvering engines burn monomethyl hydrazine (CH3NHNH2) or some variant thereon (there are various hydrazine-based fuels) and nitrogen tetroxide (N2O4). The various small solids for things like SRB ejection I don't have data on, but figuring them as similar to the SRBs is close enough. The rubber in the SRBs is probably a petrochemical, and hydrogen (when made by the usual industrial process) is too. The methyl group in MMH is probably oil-derived as well. Probably much more significant, though, is all the fossil-fuel-dependent support equipment, e.g. the aircraft. However... the amounts of petrochemicals used in spaceflight are tiny by industrial standards, and spaceflight would probably have a high priority on available reserves. Remember that there are US oilfields that are owned by the US government, e.g. the Naval Petroleum Reserve, specifically to ensure availability of oil for crucial functions in the event of major disruption. Non-essential flights might be cancelled or postponed, but there would be no great problem keeping the shuttle operating for functions considered important enough. -- SVR4: every feature you ever | Henry Spencer at U of Toronto Zoology wanted, and plenty you didn't.| uunet!attcan!utzoo!henry henry@zoo.toronto.edu ------------------------------ Date: 10 Feb 90 22:18:21 GMT From: cs.utexas.edu!jarvis.csri.toronto.edu!utgpu!utzoo!henry@tut.cis.ohio-state.edu (Henry Spencer) Subject: Re: SVR4 In article 27000@AECLCR.BITNET (SIMMONS DONALD F) writes: >>SVR4: every feature you ever wanted, >> and plenty you didn't. > >Pardon me if my ignorance is showing, but what is SVR4? If so, then why send Magellan at all? Especially if the VEEGA plan was conceived before Magellan was launched. It just seems that the Galileo could have done both tasks for less money. I'm compiling a list of space launches and landings (or crashings, in the case of decaying orbits) and I was wondering if you could help, specifically: When exactly did the Solar Maximum Mission satellite fall? What are the dates, highlights, payloads, crew, etc of the shuttle flights since they began anew with (I think) STS-28. Also, why was the old method of naming flights abandoned? You know, STS-51J and all that.
