The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft Windows NT operating system, version 3.1
 - Microsoft Windows NT Advanced Server, version 3.1

SYMPTOMS
========

When running Windows NT, you may receive the following message:

   Insufficient extended memory to run in standard mode. Increase
   available extended memory or run in real mode.

CAUSE
=====

This error message indicates DOSX.EXE (which provides DOS Protected
Mode Interface [DPMI] services) was unable to allocate extended
memory. This problem occurs when all available virtual memory on the
machine has already been allocated.

RESOLUTION
==========

Close one or more applications or make more disk space available (so
that the size of the paging file can be increased).
