CONFIG.SYS CHANGES

You need to have at least 60 file handles and 15 buffers for
Handy Man to work correctly. This is done by putting the
following 2 lines in your config.sys file :

                FILES=85
                BUFFERS=35

SHELL.CFG CHANGES

If you are running Handy Man on a network (your mom always told
you to share, didn't she?) your shell.cfg file should also have
        the following statement :

                FILES HANDLES=85

ENVIRONMENT VARIABLES

You need to issue the following statement (ALL CAPS) before you
attempt to run Handy Man (preferably you would put this in
        your autoexec.bat file) :

                SET CLIPPER=F85

GETTING STARTED

        INSTALLATION

            (1) Make a directory on your hard disk drive.

                Example : c:\> md hm

            (2) Change to the new directory you have just made.

                Example : c:\> cd hm

            IF DOWNLOADED FROM A BBS
                (3) Copy the zip file to the
                    directory you have created.

                    Example : c:\hm\> copy C:hm31.zip

                (4) Use PKzip to unzip the file hm31.zip.

                    Example : c:\hm\> pkunzip hm31

                (5) You may delete the HM31.ZIP file from your hard
                    drive if you wish.

                    Example : c:\hm\> del hm31.zip

            OTHERWISE
                (3) Copy the files from the diskette to the
                    directory you have created.

                    Example : c:\hm\> copy a:*.*

                (4) Type HM31 at the DOS prompt. This will unzip
into the Handy Man program (HM.EXE) and several
                    data files.

                    Example : c:\hm\> hm31

                (5) You may delete the HM31.EXE file from your hard
                    drive if you wish.

                    Example : c:\hm\> del hm31.exe

UP AND RUNNING

To run Handy Man all you need to do is type "HM" at the DOS
prompt. You will be prompted to enter your first name, middle
initial, and last name. Handy Man will then assign you a password
that is equal to the first eight letters of your last name. This
is so Handy Man can set you up as an administrator. Being an
administrator will give you certain rights to do things in the
Handy Man program that others won't have.

Handy Man will begin by creating several data and index
files. After a few of these files have been created, you will be
presented with a screen to enter company and areacode informa-
tion. To enter data into this screen just press the <RETURN> key
and begin entering. Once every field has been entered, press the
<ESC> key to let the Handy Man installation to continue. **NOTE**
It is IMPORTANT that you enter the right telephone area code on
this screen in order for the phone dialer to work correctly.

At some point in the installation routine, you will be
prompted to enter ALL phone number prefixes that are local to
you. For example, if your phone number is '222-5555', you would
press the <INS> key and enter '222'. If you live in a city, there
may be several prefixes which will be local to you.

You are now ready to go. Take some time to just browse
through the many Handy Man options and menus and look at the
context sensitive help screens (by pressing the F1 key). The
Administration menu can be accessed by using the arrow keys to
highlight 'Admin' and pressing the <RETURN> key. Be sure to read
the manual that comes with your registered version of Handy Man.

LOGGING IN AND OUT

When you normally start Handy Man by typing 'HM' at the DOS
prompt, you will be asked for a password. You will be given 3
tries to enter a correct password. To exit Handy Man, just press
the <ESC> key when you are at the main screen.

**NOTE** It is VERY IMPORTANT that you properly exit
the Handy Man software program as described
above. Improper exiting (such as turning
off your computer while the program is
                  still running) can compromise data
                  integrity.
