Johannesburg is the second largest city in South
Africa. Only Cape Town is larger. Johannesburg
lies in southern Transvaal Province in the heart of
the Witwatersrand, the richest gold field in the
world. It lies 30 miles southwest of Pretoria.
Gold has made Johannesburg the most important
industrial and commercial city in South Africa.
Deep coal mines, some below sea level, lie beneath
the city. This area is also rich in deposits of
coal, iron, and other minerals. These minerals
supply the fuel and raw materials for machinery and
metal products industries. The city has 2 univer-
sities, 2 observatories, an art gallery, and two
            museums.
