Rio, as it is commonly called, is the second larg-
est city in Brazil. Only So Paulo is larger. It
lies on the Guanabara Bay, on the Atlantic Ocean.
Rio has many old, narrow streets and low stucco
buildings, built when it was a Portuguese colonial
city. But its fine harbor, busy commercial life,
and new buildings make it a progressive, modern
metropolis. Avenida Rio Branco, one of the main
thoroughfares in the city's business section, is
more than 100 feet wide. Several granite hills,
some 3,000 feet high, seperate the city into
districts. Tunnels run through some of these hills
and connect the districts with one another. One of
Rio's impressive landmarks is a huge statue of
Christ the Redemmer standing 100 feet high.
