Berlin, the capital and largest city in Germany,
is located in the northeastern part of the country
on the Spree River. Berlin is situated in the
German lowlands in the area traditionally known as
the Mark of Brandenburg. Western Berlin's manufac-
tured products include electrical appliances, mach-
            inery, garments, optical goods, pharmaceuticals,
and printed matter. In the 1980's it developed an
important service industry and became one of
Europe's foremost convention cities. Tourism is
also a major source of income. Berlin is an import-
ant center of scientific research, with some 180 re-
search institutions. Berlin suffered great destruc-
tion in WW II but has since risen from the ashes.
