HONEYWELL OFFERS IBM-COMPATIBLE TOUCH PANEL KEYBOARD FOR HARSH
ENVIRONMENTS

The TCE434 (84TC) Series Touch Panel Keyboard from Honeywell is a sealed,
flat-panel interface device for applications where dust, grime, moisture
or liquid spills might create problems for full-travel keyboards.

As a standard product, it is plug-compatible with both the IBM PC and PC-AT
and automatically selects the proper interface. The keyboard is also
available as a standard product with the AT or XT interface only. The
intelligent 84-key touch panel combines extensive graphic design
versatility with the latest developments in environmentally protected
membrane switching. Tactile feedback is accomplished with a metal
snap-disc and an embossed touch surface to enable positive finger
positioning.

An on-board microcomputer includes an 8-bit CPU, ROM program memory, RAM
data memory, input/output lines, a timer/event counter and an electronic
secretarial shift. A 16-character first-in / first-out (FIFO) buffer is
included for high throughput.

Timed auto repeat is available on all data keys. An audible feature can be
enabled to provide positive key response. LED status indicators for "Num
Lock," "Caps Lock" and "Scroll Lock" are also standard. The hard-coated
surface is impervious to many chemicals found in factory, medical,
laboratory and commercial applications.

The touch panel itself is completely flat except for embossing. Subsurface
printing techniques result in long-wearing durability. Custom graphics are
available, enabling any format, type style, graphic symbol key
configuration or logo to be incorporated. The panel surface can have a
smooth finish or be textured in matte, velvet or suede finishes.
Dead-front color legends and color windows for illuminated displays can be
provided for status indication.

The membrane construction of the panel is created by screening contacts and
circuitry paths in conductive ink on polyester film. They are separated by
an insulating sheet (spacer) with holes that space the switch contact
points. When force is applied to a switch station, contact points close
the circuit. Built-in channel venting allows air pressure variations to be
equalized for operational uniformity without disturbing the adhesive
mounting seal.
