Barr Systems Announces AFP and XPAF Support

(Gainesville, FL--June 23, 1992) Barr Systems, Inc. has announced support
for IBM's Advanced Function Printing (AFP) and Xerox's Printer Access
Facility (XPAF). These features were added to Barr's PRINT370 product for
printing to remote S/370 channel-attached printers. Barr Systems, Inc.
offers a complete line of PC-based solutions for remote printing, 3270
emulation and file transfer.

PRINT370 is an option to the BARR RJE, RJE+3270, and BARR GATEWAY
communications products. Print streams from sources such as: JES, 3287,
AFP, XPAF, 5250-twinax, magnetic tape, and PCs on a LAN can simultaneously
be distributed to parallel, serial, and S/370 channel-attached printers.
Host connection is made via SDLC, X.25, 802.2 Token Ring, twinax, or
COAX.

AFP is a page description language used to generate complex images of text,
graphics, and bar codes without regard to the specific output device. AFP
achieves this by using IBM's Print Services Facility to translate the AFP
data stream into an Intelligent Printer Data Stream (IPDS). Through the
IPDS dialogue capability, output can be directed to a variety of
high-speed printers.

To support IPDS printers such as the IBM 3825, 3827, 3828, 3835, and 3900,
Barr has implemented the LU 6.2 functions needed to support AFP, including
return of printer responses. The AFP solution features device-independent
page descriptions, error handling and recovery, support for PostScript and
line printer data, and dynamic form generation.

The Xerox Printer Access Facility (XPAF) is another method of printing from
AFP applications. XPAF translates the page description into Xerox
metacodes instead of IPDS. XPAF sends data to the printer using the SNA
Character Set (SCS) and LU Type 1. This is the same print stream used by
3270 printers. With XPAF, Barr's RJE+3270 or BARR GATEWAY product can
deliver the output from AFP applications to Xerox printers that support
the S/370 data stream, including the 4235.

Barr's RJE+3270 and BARR GATEWAY products can handle 3270 printer data and
RJE print jobs from JES2, JES3, VM/RSCS, or VSE/POWER simultaneously. By
adding the PRINT370 option, RJE and 3270 data can be directed to S/370
channel printers.

Barr's communications packages range from $1,790 to $2,540, including
software, adapter, and documentation. The PRINT370 option is priced at
$6,190. Barr Systems, Inc. offers a complete line of PC-based host
connectivity products, supporting high-volume printing and file transfer
via RJE and 3270 protocols. For more information, call 1-800-227-7797.
