NEW ACERANYWARE V386SL FIRST NOTEBOOK TO IMPLEMENT BOTH PCMCIA AND ExCA
INDUSTRY STANDARDS

Starting at $2,495, New 386SL-Based Acer Notebook Sets Standard for Value
in High-Performance Notebooks

SAN JOSE, CA, June 1, 1992 -- The Acer Group today announced the industry's
first notebook to concurrently implement the new PCMCIA and Intel ExCA
standards for interchangeable memory, facsimile and networking components.
The new AcerAnyWare V386SL, priced at $2,495 for 80MB of hard disk storage
and $2,895 for 120MB, offers a 25MHz Intel 386SL processor, 4MB of memory
(expandable to 12MB), a large 10-inch high resolution LCD display,
optimized power management capabilities for increased battery life, and an
optional docking station for desktop use.

"By offering advanced features, until now only available with notebooks
priced $4,000 or higher, the AcerAnyWare V386SL breaks the price barrier
that has been a major obstacle to the widespread use of notebooks," said
Pete Janssen, vice president of sales and marketing, consumer products.
"Users now have an affordable notebook with the power, convenience,
expandability and applications flexibility of a desktop PC -- making the
AcerAnyWare V386SL a strong candidate to replace many users' desktop
systems."

Docking Station for Full Desktop Functionality

The AcerAnyWare V386SL achieves full desktop functionality through its
optional DS-1 Docking Station. The docking station provides a rich
complement of features, including an SCSI controller, which allows users
to plug in CD ROMs and other increasingly popular SCSI devices, a built in
disk drive bay; two slots for 16-bit ISA cards; a built-in battery
charger; an auto-sensing power supply, permitting use with either 220 or
110 Volt outlets; and a panel that duplicates the notebook's connectors,
enabling users to dock the notebook with all peripherals simply by sliding
it into the docking station. Like the notebook itself, the docking station
leads the industry in price/performance with a list price of $695,
compared to competitors' docking stations priced at $800 to $1,000.

PCMCIA/ExCA Standard Benefits

The AcerAnyWare V386SL is one of the first notebooks to implement both of
the major industry standards for compact, insertable cards - the PCMCIA
hardware standard specified by the Personal Computer Memory Card
International Association, and the Exchangeable Card Architecture (ExCA)
software standard from Intel (and supported by Microsoft). As a result,
the AcerAnyWare V386SL enables users to easily add the full connectivity
and disk storage capabilities of standard desktop devices to their
portable and handheld computers without having to learn technical
configuration tasks.

"With the AcerAnyWare V386SL's standard architecture, users are no longer
tied to the proprietary components used by most notebook vendors," said
Janssen. "Now they can easily upgrade or expand the functionality of their
systems simply by inserting a PCMCLA card."

Enhanced Features Through Acer's Advanced BIOS

The AcerAnyWare V386SL's advanced BIOS, developed by Acer, provides
important advantages over other vendors' notebooks using a readymade
BIOS.

o Optimized power management capabilities provide a battery life of up to
8 hours, depending on how intensely the notebook is used. Because the
AcerAnyWare V386SL is one of the few notebooks that can be used all day
without having to be rebooted, it is ideal for managers, who typically
work intermittently with their system between meetings and other
activities. The AcerAnyWare V386SL automatically detects that they are not
being used, and automatically returns users to where they left off.

o Superior quality LCD display. The AcerAnyWare V386SL's optimized video
BIOS provides the sharpest, crispest picture possible.

o Flash memory on the motherboard for the BIOS. Unlike other notebooks,
which utilize a ROM-based BIOS, the AcerAnyWare V386SL's flash memory
allows users or resellers to immediately take advantage of any BIOS
upgrades as soon as they become available from Acer. A new BIOS can be
easily loaded into flash memory from a diskette.

The Human Factor: Features for Ergonomics, User Friendliness

The AcerAnyWare V386SL incorporates valuable features which meet the demand
of users in the marketplace for ease of use. In addition to the
flexibility and simplicity afforded by its PCMCIA cards, these features
include:

o Compact and lightweight. Measuring 8.5 x 11.4 x 1.9 inches and weighing
5.8 pounds, the AcerAnyWare V386SL is easily transportable.

o Easy memory upgrades. Up to 12MB of memory can be added to sockets in an
easily accessible bay at the top of the keyboard.

o Easy math coprocessor upgrade. Users can add a math coprocessor to a low
insertion force socket on the bottom of the system.

o Battery changing on the fly. If the battery runs down during use, an
internal backup battery allows the user to change it without having to
reboot the system.

o Standby button. By pressing this button on the top of the keyboard, a
user can put the system to sleep. In this mode, the system can be left on
for more than two days. This allows users to leave their system and
perform their activities without having to turn it off and reboot it
later.

Availability

The AcerAnyWare V386SL will be available in July. The DS-1 Docking station
will be available in August.
