SUN MICRO EXEC BILL LARSON NAMED CEO OF McAFEE ASSOCIATES; ADDS MANAGEMENT
DEPTH TO FAST-GROWING SOFTWARE COMPANY

Founder and Current CEO John McAfee Assumes Position of Chief Technical
Officer; Concentrates on Strategic Technology Acquisition and Development

SANTA CLARA, CALIF. (August 18, 1993) -- McAfee Associates, Inc. (NASDAQ:
MCAF), the world's leading developer and electronic distributor of
anti-virus software for personal computers and networks, today named Sun
Microsystems executive, Bill Larson, as the company's new chief executive
officer. Larson, who stepped down as SunSoft's Vice President of Sales and
Marketing, is expected to bring considerable strategic planning and
management expertise to McAfee Associates as the company diversifies its
product line and leverages its position as the industry's leading
electronic software distributor.

John McAfee, McAfee Associates' founder and present CEO, will assume the
position of Chief Technical Officer, while remaining chairman of the
board. The position will allow McAfee to assume greater hands-on and
strategic involvement in the development and acquisition of new products
and technologies necessary for the company's diversification. McAfee will
devote full time to identifying potential acquisition candidates and
developing new technologies for communications, utilities, and network
management products. William McKiernan remains the chief operating
officer.

As vice president of sales and marketing at SunSoft, Inc., a subsidiary of
Sun Microsystems and the world's second largest system software company,
Larson managed worldwide sales, service and marketing. Larson is credited
with establishing Solaris as the leading 32-bit operating system
alternative to Microsoft's Windows NT. Larson also built a worldwide field
sales organization that included major OEM accounts such as Dell and AST,
distributors such as Merisel and Ingram Micro, and a dealer network of
over 2,000 resellers. Prior to Sun, Larson held senior executive positions
at Apple Computer, Spinnaker Software and Bain & Co.

"The hiring of Bill Larson will boost our management structure and allow me
to focus my full attention on the development and acquisition of new
products for introduction through our electronic distribution channel and
to our installed base of over 15,000 corporate accounts," said John
McAfee.

While McAfee Associates continues its leadership position in the anti-virus
software market, the company has taken several steps to diversify its
product offerings to include other software suited to electronic
distribution. The most notable example of this strategy is the company's
recently completed letter of intent to acquire personal database developer
ButtonWare Inc, of Bellevue, WA. The company recently further enhanced its
management team with the recent addition of Marc LeBrun as vice president
of research and development. LeBrun is the former director of advanced
technology at Autodesk.

McAfee Associates, headquartered in Santa Clara, California, develops,
markets, and distributes general purpose personal computer utilities and
network software designed for electronic distribution. Its anti-virus
product line is one of the premier brands of virus protection, detection
and eradication software, with millions of users worldwide. The company's
software is distributed electronically through a network of bulletin
boards, CompuServe, America Online, Internet, and through a unique network
of 180 authorized agents who provide local sales and technical support.
