Aldus PageMaker 5 Adds Support for KeyServer Network License Management

Hanover, NH, Aug. 2, 1993--Sassafras Software Inc. and Aldus Corporation
announced today that the newly released Aldus PageMaker 5 includes
KeyServer technology that lets PageMaker take best advantage of the
extensive license management services available with Sassafras KeyServer.

When KeyServer license management software is not in use, Aldus PageMaker 5
restricts application launches to one launch per serial number. However,
at networked sites that use the industry standard Sassafras KeyServer,
PageMaker 5 can take advantage of KeyServer's versatile set of license
compliance tools to make software publicly accessible, and still maintain
legal use. With a single version of PageMaker, Aldus has implemented a
licensing solution that is convenient and practical for standalone users
and for network users with or without KeyServer.

Sassafras KeyServer

KeyServer is a network management tool commonly known as a "Software
License Manager". KeyServer is used both to enforce software license
compliance and to make software programs more accessible for legal use at
user's sites. Other features of KeyServer are used to maintain version
consistency of programs distributed throughout a site and stop software
piracy.

KeyServer controls concurrent usage limits for programs installed
throughout a network. It can also be employed to manage dedicated usage
licenses, groupware licenses and other types of software licenses.

Sassafras engineers have been instrumental in developing industry standards
like the "LSAPI" (License Server Application Programmer Interface), which
has been co-developed by other vendors including Microsoft, Novell, Apple
and DEC.

KeyServer Functionality

KeyServer controls the use and availability of Macintosh applications used
throughout a network site according to the details of each particular
software license. Concurrent usage limits for Macintosh applications are
enforced without introducing new obstacles to end users or software
publishers. KeyServer works much like a library. To run an application, a
user simply launches the application as usual. Upon launch, the
application transparently checks out a key from a central KeyServer. The
KeyServer maintains a usage count, and will not grant a key if the count
would exceed the maximum number of licenses allowed.

According to Kirk Loevner, Vice President for the Apple Developer Group,

"KeyServer addresses the fundamental issues of software license compliance
within organizations. It allows for effective and economical management of
software applications across groups of users and ensures that every launch
of a software application is a legal one."

In its most widely used form, KeyServer is sold to network administrators,
who act as the conscience for their entire network. In most cases network
administrators are willing to take responsibility for license compliance
when given practical tools and the permission to do so. These
administrators and their companies have made a commitment to legal
software use. KeyServer allows them to manage the software on their
network easily and accurately, so that they may focus their attention on
tasks other than policing their users.

All Macintosh applications on the market today can be controlled by
KeyServer without modification. Macintosh applications do not have to be
programmed to be aware of KeyServer. However, some application programs
also implement their own internal license counting technology. While
KeyServer can control licenses for these programs, in some cases the
administrative benefits of KeyServer are undermined by the application
program's serial number requirements.

In order to better support users at KeyServer managed sites, several
software publishers have made their programs "KeyServer aware" so that
KeyServer's more versatile management tools can be used without
interference. Among the many benefits of using KeyServer, a network
manager can track usage and gauge the need for additional software
licenses. Network administrators, software users, and software publishers
benefit from KeyServer's integrated management of programs whether used on
the network site or checked out for off-site use.
