NEW PORTABLE BAR CODE READER WEIGHS ONLY 12 OUNCES; FEATURES LONG BATTERY
LIFE; MICROSOFT WINDOWS-BASED PROGRAMMING AND AT, PS/2 BAR CODE WEDGE
INTERFACES FOR FIXED-STATION APPLICATIONS

July 30, 1993 -- EUGENE, OR--A new portable bar code reader, the PT 2000,
is now available from Percon, Inc., a leading manufacturer of bar code
reading equipment. The PT 2000 features a slim, ergonomic design, long
battery life, the ability to use a variety of input devices and a built-in
AT, PS/2 bar code wedge interface for fixed-station scanning
applications.

"Market research indicated portable users want an affordable unit that is
easy to Program, light weight, has a long battery life and is adaptable to
a variety of applications," says Doug Wilson, Director of Sales and
Marketing. "The PT 2000 is the answer to that need."

The PT 2000 offers users the flexibility to choose the appropriate input
device for an application, whether it's a wand, CCD, SV laser or I.D Badge
scanner. Its four-line by 16-character LCD display provides easy
readability and users can scroll through and review up to 24 lines of data
held in a display buffer. Thirty-four splash-resistant alphanumeric keys,
including four programmable keys, give users the option of keying in data.
A real time clock and calendar allows any record to be time/date stamped.
Audible feedback is provided through an adjustable-volume speaker.

In addition, the PT 2000 autodiscriminates between any combination of three
loaded symbologies. It offers data storage memory beginning at 128K with
upgrades available in convenient 128K increments up to one megabyte. The
PT 2000--using an included RS-232C interface and flexible menu-driven
communications protocols--it interfaces to a wide variety of computers for
data downloading.

"We offer source code for DOS, UNIX and Macintosh platforms," says Rob
Hougen, Vice President-Engineering. "This feature enables end users to
integrate communications into their application."

Users have a choice of three AA alkaline batteries, three NiCd batteries or
a rechargeable NiCd battery pack to power the PI 2000 for up to 12 hours
of continuous use. Should the batteries fail, a lithium back up battery is
built into the unit for up to 10 days of memory storage.

"Battery life wasn't sacrificed in making the unit light weight," says Andy
Storment, Vice President. "Over 20,000 scans can be performed with a 5V
laser or CCD."

The PT 2000 features a built-in AT, PS/2 interface, so it can be used as a
keyboard wedge for those applications including point-of-sale and
library/video check out which require fixed-station scanning during
business hours and portable scanning during off hours.

"This added feature allows users to purchase one unit for multiple
applications," says Wilson. "It offers the user a cost-effective way to
implement both portable and fixed-station bar code scanning."

Application programs for the PT 2000 are quickly and easily created using
Percon Program Generator (PPG) software. Running in a Microsoft
Windows-based environment, PPG uses a graphical user interface (GUI) and
object-oriented programming with the Windows interface to set up a
complete custom data collection program. Once a user has created an
application program, PPG automatically compiles it into the format needed
for the PI 2000. Users may download programs designed for specific
applications into the PT 2000's bank erasable flash ROM memory in
seconds.

"Traditionally, changing application programs was very difficult. A user
would have to reburn an EPROM under ultraviolet light, a very
time-consuming task," adds Storment. "With the PT 2000, reprogramming
takes just a few seconds using the unit's bank erasable flash ROM memory.
As a result, the user saves money by minimizing downtime."

Backed by a one-year warranty, this durable unit, made of high-strength
polycarbonate-blend plastic is rugged enough to withstand multiple drops
to concrete. It's compact size, ergonomic design, and long battery life
make the PT 2000 an excellent choice for use in a variety of environments
including inventory control, point-of-sale, and route accounting.

The suggested list price for PT 2000 (Part Number 40-000-00, 128K model),
begins at $795.00 (US, quantity one) which includes three AA batteries.
The PT 2000 is backed by a one year warranty with optional extended and
on-site warranties available. Suggested list price for PPG software, part
number 00-730-20, is $295.00.
