BROTHER LAUNCHES A 600 DPI LASER PRINTER WITH PCL 5e AND POSTSCRIPT
LANGUAGE EMULATIONS STANDARD

At $1699, It Has the Best Price/Performance Ratio in its Class

SOMERSET, NJ, (August 30, 1993) - Brother International Corporation's
Office Systems Division (OSD) today announced the HL-10h - a 10
page-per-minute (ppm), 600 dots-per-inch (dpi) printer The HL-10h is
designed for today's demanding business and graphics professional who
needs high quality output, network connectivity and the ability to
effortlessly handle complex printing needs

The many features and design of the HL-10h make it equally appropriate for
use by a single user or in a network environment. Standard, leading edge
features include patented automatic emulation switching, 83 resident
fonts, 10 resident bar codes, a high speed bi-directional parallel port,
PCMCIA slot, 600 dpi resolution with High Resolution Control, 256 grey
scales, automatic interlace switching and data compression.

Advanced Technology and Compatibility

The HL-10h emulates the Hewlett Packard LaserJet 4 (PCL 5e with HPGL/2).
And unlike many other printers in this class, the HL-10h comes standard
with its own PostScript emulation (BR-Script) that provides full support
for Adobe Type 1 and Multiple Master fonts. This combination of standard
emulations can save the average user approximately $500 in additional
upgrade costs.

In addition to a high speed RS-232C serial port, the HL-10h comes standard
with a high speed, bidirectional, Centronics parallel port which allows
the printer to send and receive printer status messages.

The HL-10h features a standard, internal third interface port. This third
interface port provides compatibility with various third-party network
interface cards (Ethernet, Token Ring) and printer sharing devices
(Network Interfaces: Ethernet, Token Ring; Network Operating Systems:
Novell Netware 286 2.1x and Netware 386 3.x).

An important productivity advantage of the HL-10h is its auto interface
selection feature. The HL10h can sense the input signal that it is
receiving and select the proper port automatically.

Patented automatic emulation switching is another productivity and
auto-intelligence feature of the HL-10h. It can automatically sense and
adjust to which type of data it is receiving among its PCL 5e, BR-Script,
HPGL, IBM Proprinter XL, Epson 850, and Diablo 630 standard emulations.
This extensive list of standard emulations ensures compatibility with
major personal computer platforms and popular software application
packages.

Both auto-intelligence features mentioned above minimize manual user
interaction and spare endusers an extra trip to the printer to adjust the
control panel. They are especially useful in multiuser and LAN
environments where unique user needs require various printer adjustments.

To prevent unauthorized control panel setting changes, the HL-10h has a
password controlled "Settings Lock" feature which is especially important
in multi-user and network environments.

Professional, Quality, Photographic Output

The HL-10h features the very reliable Brother print engine which produces
output of typeset quality. Sharp, crisp text and well-defined graphics are
a result of its 600 dpi resolution and High Resolution Control features.

With Brother's High Resolution Control, the HL-10h renders both text and
graphics that are virtually free from "stair steps" and jagged edges.

The HL-10h can produce intricate and detailed graphics through its ability
to support more grey scales than other mid-range laser printer. When using
its Advanced PhotoScale Technology (APT) in PCL 5e mode and utilizing the
proper software, the HL-10h can print Tagged Image File Format (TIFF)
graphic files with up to 256 grey scales at 53 lines per inch (lpi). The
Hewlett Packard LaserJet 4 can only support up to 64 grey scales at 37 lpi
and the Lexmark Model 4039 up to 101 grey scales at 53 lpi.

PCMCIA Support

Unlike the Hewlett Packard LaserJet 4, the Brother HL-10h has a standard
PCMCIA slot. This slot accepts Type 1 flash memory cards to save often
used forms and to back up fonts and data. It supports commercially
available PCMCIA cards in sizes up to 20 MB.

Fast Printing Speed

The HL-10h's 10 page-per-minute rated engine offers the end-user 25% more
output speed than the more common 8 page-per-minute engine printers. To
quickly and efficiently handle demanding graphics, the HL-10h is powered
by a 32 bit, 25 MHz microprocessor. This in combination with the HL-10h's
automatic data compression technology (ADC), allows it to easily handle
both sophisticated graphics and text applications . In various PCL 6e
application speed tests, the HL-10h tested faster than the Hewlett Packard
LaserJet 4 [24% faster in word processing (Microsoft Word 2.0 for Windows
document), 22% faster in graphics (Corel Draw 3.0 document), 19% faster in
desktop publishing (PageMaker 4.0 for Windows document), and 11% faster in
spreadsheets (Microsoft Excel 4.0 for Windows document)].

The ADC feature in graphics mode operates transparently and requires no
user interaction as it reduces the file size while maintaining no loss of
data. This allows more information to be processed and transferred faster
with less memory requirements.

Each HL-10h comes with a diskette containing an optimized Windows 3.1
driver.

The HL-10h's Last Page Reprint feature via the control panel allows the
reprinting of a page directly by the printer without the need to download
the data again from the personal computer.

Wide Font and Memory Selection

The HL-10h comes with 83 resident fonts - the most in its printer class -
which includes a combination of bit map and scalable (Intellifont
compatible, TrueType compatible, and BR-Script) fonts.

Another unique feature is the inclusion of 10 resident bar codes (UPC-A,
UPC-E, Code 128, EAN-8, EAN-13, Code 3 of 9, Interleaved 2 of 5, CODEBAR,
ISBN and POSTNET).

The printer comes with one Hewlett Packard compatible font cartridge slot
which can accommodate a number of industry standard font cartridges.

The HL-10h comes with 2MB of RAM standard. Expansion up to 34 MB of total
on board memory is easily achieved by adding industry standard SIMMs
directly to the controller board. Additional memory upgrade options
available are: the MS-1, a 1 megabyte SIMM ($98 SRP); the MS-2 ($195 SRP),
a 2 megabyte SIMM, the MS-4 ($390 SRP), a 4 megabyte SIMM, and the MS-8
($695 SRP), an 8 megabyte SIMM.

Adjustable Input Buffer and Page Protection features can be selected to
allow users to better manage available memory and ensure complete document
printing.

Uses Industry Standard One-Piece Toner Cartridge

The HL-10h uses the same one piece Canon EPS toner cartridge as the Canon
LBP and the Hewlett Packard LaserJet III. This cartridge is widely
available from various resellers nationwide and is known for its easy,
clean-hands installation. The toner is rated for 4000 pages at 5%
coverage.

EPA EnergyStar Program Approved, Small Footprint, Ergonomic Design

Citing its low energy usage, the HL-10h was selected by the Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) for inclusion in the EPA EnergyStar Program.
Unlike the Hewlett Packard LaserJet 4, the HL-10h gives an end-user the
flexibility to select when the printer will automatically "power down"
during periods of inactivity.

The small footprint of the HL-10h takes up approximately 17% less space
than the 8 ppm Hewlett Packard LaserJet 4. The printer comes standard with
an adjustable 250 sheet paper drawer (the only adjusting and largest paper
drawer in its class) that can accommodate letter, legal, A4, B5,
executive, envelope and transparency stock. Since the adjustable drawer
can accommodate multiple paper sizes and stock, it eliminates the added
expense of additional size specific paper trays. An optional, adjustable
250 sheet second paper drawer ($419 SRP) can be linked to the standard
tray to handle longer print runs and/or different paper sizes and types.

The HL-10h's easy-to-read display and control panel can be tilted upward
for optimal operation and readability, while providing a user with direct
access to numerous functions. Printer messages and status can be set to
one of six different languages (English, French, German, Dutch, Spanish,
Italian).

Warranty and Reliability

The HL-10h includes a two-year parts and labor warranty. In and out of
warranty service is available on a walk-in, send-in, or on-site basis
through Brother, a nationwide network of Brother OSD Authorized Service
Depots or nationally through Dow Jones (depending on location).
