Personal Communicators + Wireless Revolution = Social Change

LIVINGSTON, NJ. August 16, 1993: Wireless data communicators that mix
text,graphics--even multi-media messaging--will soon begin usurping the
role of the traditional telephone line as the means to convey information
between distant locations, according to a new report from Insight Research
Corporation. Changes wrought by this new way of communicating will remake
social and business habits, the report says.

The report, Wireless Data Transport: Applications & Markets, 1993-1998,
argues that recent advances in digital signal processing (DSP) and display
technologies are creating a new class of light-weight portable data
terminals capable of operating anywhere. Newer DSPs make it possible to
transmit higher bit rates than ever before possible while bigger displays
--more akin to computer monitors rather than LCD displays-- consume only
small amounts of power, so battery weight is reduced without degrading
performance. These technological improvements are fostering new varieties
of wireless terminals designed to service different consumer and business
market segments.

The report suggests that the personal communicator could surpass the fax in
terms of its impact on business practice and social interactions because
they are being positioned as personal artifacts-not business machines.

According to Insight, wireless communications markets will enjoy better
than a 20 percent compound annual growth rate over the next five years.
Insight predicts that hybrid terminals offering such capabilities as
store-and-forward messaging via an integral modem as well as a built-in
telephone will combine the best of both worlds: the necessity of receiving
information anywhere in the world, and the convenience of being able to
speak to the originator of the message immediately. These hybrid machines
are the essence of the personal communication services (PCS). Applications
such as mobile electronic mail, news and information services, and two-way
interactive paging will be just some of the horizontal markets for these
communicators.
