BROTHER LAUNCHES A NEW 6 PPM, PCL 5 INTELLIGENT LASER PRINTER - HL-6V

Features Optimized Windows Driver - At Under $699 Street, Best
Price/Performance Ratio in its Class

SOMERSET, NJ, (August 30,1993) - Brother International Corporation today
announced the HL-6V, a 6 page-per-minute (ppm), 300 dots-per-inch (dpi),
PCL 5 language emulation desktop laser printer with a suggested retail
price of $995, according to John Wandishin, Director of Marketing,
Printers.

The HL-6V is targeted for the user who requires quality laser output at an
affordable price. Since the HL-6V includes many features found in more
expensive desktop laser printers, it is well suited to perform in a
business setting as either a convenience or medium volume network
printer.

Standard, leading-edge features of the HL-6V include patented automatic
emulation switching, auto-interface switching, 50 fonts, 300 dpi
resolution with High Resolution Control, proprietary data compression and
certification by the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) EnergyStar
Program for low power consumption.

Utilizes IntelliPrint Technology to Support No-Hassle Printing

The HL-6V comes with many higher level laser printing features that are
commonly found in more expensive desktop laser printers. Intelliprint
encompasses a number of these features such as:

-Auto Emulation Switching - Allows the HL-6V to automatically sense and
adjust to the data stream sent by the personal computer.

-Auto Interface Switching - The printer can automatically determine whether
the data stream is coming over the parallel or serial port.

-High Resolution Control - By manipulating the toner dot size, HRC
virtually eliminates annoying "jaggies" to produce near typeset quality
output.

-Power Save Mode - The ability to power down and conserve energy when not
in use. The HL-6V is recognized by the EPA's EnergyStar Program because of
its adjustable Power Save Feature.

-Reprint Mode - Ability to print just the last page through a one button
command from the control panel.

-Advanced Paper Handling - When utilizing the optional lower tray, this
printer can automatically sense the paper size that it needs.

-Data Compression - Facilitates faster data throughput, thus faster
printing.

-Setting Status Page - A one-page print out that itemizes all the settings
for the printer which eliminates the need to go through each menu for
diagnosis of any printer settings.

These auto-intelligence features minimize manual user interaction, and are
especially useful in multiuser and LAN environments where unique user
needs require various printer adjustments. The HL-6V even has a Lock-Up
Settings Feature which allows an end-user to set and lock the panel
switches to prevent unauthorized adjustments.

Professional-Like, Quality Output

The HL-6V produces output of near typeset quality. Sharp, crisp text, and
well-defined graphics are the result of its 300 dpi resolution.

The printer comes standard with Hewlett Packard LaserJet IIIP (PCL 5),
Epson FX-8500, and IBM Proprinter emulations. An optional BR-Script
upgrade (PostScript language emulation interpreter) cartridge will be
available during the Fall of 1993. These emulations ensure compatibility
with major personal computer platforms and popular software application
packages.

Fast Printing Speed

The HL-6V's 6 page per minute rated engine offers the user 50% more engine
speed than the more common 4 page per minute engine printers in this
class. To quickly and efficiently handle demanding graphics and text, the
HL-6V utilizes an optimized Windows printer driver. This, in combination
with the HL-6V's powerful 16 MHz microprocessor and bi-directional, high
speed parallel port, makes it one of the fastest products in its class.
The HL-6V also comes standard with an RS-232C serial port.

Also incorporated into the HL-6V is automatic Data Compression. This
feature operates transparently and requires no user interaction. Data
Compression reduces a file's size while maintaining no loss of data. This
allows more information to be processed and transferred faster with less
memory requirements.

Certified by the EPA's Energy Star Program for Low Power Consumption

Every HL-6V comes with a convenient power save mode feature. The user can
easily set the unit to automatically power down or "go into sleep mode"
when not in use for a certain amount of time (1- 99 minutes). When
information is again sent to the printer, it automatically powers up or
"wakes up" and prints the file that it is receiving.

Wide Font and Memory Selection

The HL-6V features 24 standard resident bit map and 13 Intellifont
(scalable) fonts. In addition to the resident fonts, the product comes
with 13 TrueType compatible (scalable) fonts on a diskette .

The printer has one Hewlett Packard compatible font cartridge slot which
can accommodate a number of industry standard font cartridges.

The HL-6V comes with 1 MB of RAM standard. Expansion up to 5.0 MB of total
on board memory is easily achieved by adding industry standard SIMMs to a
0 MB memory upgrade board (MB-600 -$99 SRP, a bare board that can be
populated with either 2 or 4 megabyte industry-standard SIMMs). Or the end
user can purchase already configured, memory upgrade options which are:
the MB-620, a 2 megabyte board ($249 SRP); and the MB-640 ($399 SRP), a 4
megabyte board.

Uses Industry Standard One-Piece Toner Cartridge

The HL-6V uses the one piece, Canon EPL toner cartridge. This cartridge is
widely available from various resellers nationwide and is known for its
easy, clean-hands installation. The toner is rated for 3500 pages at 5%
coverage.

Small Footprint, Paper Handling, Ergonomic Design

The small footprint of the HL-6V makes it a natural for tight workspaces
where space is at a premium. To handle longer print runs, an optional 250
sheet paper drawer (LT-401; Suggested Retail $209) is available that can
accommodate letter, legal, A4, and executive stock with the proper
cassette.

The HL-6V's easy-to-read display provides a user with direct access to
numerous functions.

Warranty and Reliability

The HL-6V includes a two-year parts and labor warranty. In and out of
warranty service is available on a walk-in, send-in, or on-site basis
through Brother, a nationwide network of Brother Authorized Service Depots
or nationally through Dow Jones (depending on location).
