SYBASE, DRAKE TEAM UP TO DEVELOP FIRST CERTIFICATION PROGRAM FOR
CLIENT/SERVER SOFTWARE INDUSTRY

Program to Define Independent Measure of Client/Server Technical Expertise

EMERYVILLE, CA, August 23, 1993 -- Sybase, Inc., the Enterprise
Client/Server Company, announced today that it will collaborate with Drake
Training and Technologies, the global leader in certification testing for
the computer industry, to create the first independent certification
program for the client/server software industry. The two companies will
jointly develop a series of tests to measure the competency of computer
professionals who design software applications using SYBASE client/server
products. Certification testing for database administrators will be
available in 1993, with database developers' and database architects'
certification following in the first half of 1994.

The certification program, which will test both Sybase-specific and general
client/server expertise, will establish the first industry standard of
technical competency, forming a valuable benchmark for Sybase customers
and partners in hiring staff and consultants. This program supports the
Sybase Professional Services strategy of facilitating customer and partner
technical independence through the transfer of technical knowledge.
Certification is intended for independent individuals as well as Sybase
customers, partners, consultants and employees. To ensure the level of
client/server software technical competency is adequate to address the
needs of customers using the SYBASE products, Sybase will require that all
Sybase Service and Support personnel and Sybase Business
Partners--including VARs, ISVs and Systems Integrators--be certified on
appropriate tests.

get the highest level of expertise possible."

examine an individuals technical ability, while also beginning to define a

Sybase/Drake Collaboration

Subject matter experts from Sybase will define the areas to be tested and
will formulate approximately 250 questions for each exam, including both
SYBASE specific and general client/server questions. Testing experts from
Drake will apply proven methodologies to evaluate and validate the
questions to ensure that they are well-balanced and constitute a fair test
of the subject matter. The finalized tests will be administered at 375
Drake authorized testing centers in major markets around the world. Drake
will have a dedicated "800" number for information and registration for
SYBASE tests. 

SYBASE Certification Cost and Availability

The first series of tests for certification, for Certified SYBASE Database
Administrator, will be available by the end of 1993. This certification
will consist of three one and one half hour tests: "Fundamentals of the
SYBASE product,"

"Administration of the SYBASE SQL Server product," and "Performance and
Tuning of the SQL Server product." An individual must pass all three tests
to be certified as a SYBASE Database Administrator. The next two
certifications to be developed will be for the Certified SYBASE Developer
and the Certified SYBASE Architect, available the first half of 1994. All
tests will be priced at $150.00 per test and will be delivered on PCs,
with pass or fail results available immediately. There are no
pre-requisites for taking the certification tests, however, Sybase does
offer courses that will prepare candidates for each of the tests to be
developed.

The Sybase Global Service Organization is building the necessary
infrastructure to address the changing requirements of enterprise
client/server computing. The two divisions of the organization,
Professional Services and Technical Support, work closely together to
provide services that meet customer needs throughout the client/server
lifecycle, from development to implementation and ongoing maintenance.
