ARDI To Release of Macintosh Emulator, Executor/DOS

August 2, 1993 -- While Apple has been trying to boldly go forward with its
80X86 project code-named Star Trek, ARDI, an Albuquerque, New Mexico-based
ISV, has even more boldly gone first and announces the introduction of a
product that allows 80X86-based PCs to run unmodified Macintosh software.
The product is Executor/DOS, a Macintosh emulator that combines ARDI's
efficient 68040 synthetic CPU and their reverse engineered system
software.

ARDI is eager to make its emulation technology accessible to the average
user and is marketing its first release of Executor/DOS as an
interoperability tool with an introductory price of $99.00. That makes
ARDI's product less expensive than some utilities which only read and
write Macintosh formatted disks. As an introductory version, Executor/DOS
1.0 has some limitations--no support for: color, sound System 7,
AppleTalk, or Script Manager. In addition, many larger applications don't
work yet. Executor/DOS 2.0, slated for a May 1994 release, will clean up
these problems, but in the meantime users will have access to many
Macintosh applications and a preview of what it is like to run Macintosh
applications on a PC.

ARDI also wants to debunk the common assumption that the hidden price of
cross-platform compatibility is poor performance. ARDI has solved the
performance problem through the use of dynamic recompilation in their
synthetic CPU and their efficient reimplimentation of the system software.
The results are applications that run with what Executor users describe as
"impressive" speed.

ARDI is the leader in Macintosh emulation technology and offers consumers
the most 'wallet friendly' package. Currently there are four major
competitors in the emulation market: NuTek with expensive hardware;
Xcelerated System's Liken that requires the user to obtain system software
from Apple; Quorum Equal which runs only on expensive RISC hardware. And
although Apple has not yet released a product, all information suggests
that their 68040 emulator will work only on the Power PC and be slower
than ARDI's synthetic CPU on the Power PC.

ARDI has few competitors primarily due to the severe technological
challenges involved in making efficient emulators, but also due to the
perceived climate of hostility projected by Apple Legal. From a legal
standpoint, ARDI is well-positioned and has been shipping a version of
Executor for the NeXT workstation for 18 months with no challenge from
Apple. In fact, ARDI was the first company to ship binary
Macintosh-compatible products that do not require system software from
Apple Computer Inc.

ARDI founder and president, Clifford T. Matthews, states: "ARDI is immune
to legal challenges because Executor was developed using strictly clean
room techniques and we have never disassembled any of the Mac ROMs and
System File." In addition, he claims that, "From a look and feel
perspective, compared to Quorum's endeavors, Apple will prefer our
technology because it doesn't attempt to disguise the origins of the
applications running under it."

Executor/DOS and Executor NeXTSTEP are only the first two members of ARDI's
product family. In the works are an X-Windows and Windows NT versions of
Executor for the Alpha, MIPS and SPARC processors.

Abacus Research and Development, Inc. (ARDI) is a privately held Delaware
corporation with a primary office located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. ARDI
markets binary Macintosh compatible products that do not require system
software from Apple Computer, Inc.
