Desktop Publishing: Dollars and Sense
now, a practical guide for the desktop publisher

According to Home Office Computing magazine, the number of home-based
businesses grew to 20 million in 1991 and will have reached 31 million
people by the end of 1992. Among them are small businesses and individual
entrepreneurs who are taking advantage of desktop publishing technologies
to grow their enterprises. It's a natural step but one that needs to be
faced with understanding of the economic realities, as Scott Anderson
shows us in his new book, Desktop Publishing: Dollars and Sense.

Compared to traditional resources that examine the more technical aspects
of layout and design, Desktop Publishing: Dollars and Sense gives an
in-depth analysis of the financial and legal aspects of a profitable
desktop publishing business. Anderson includes advice from successful
graphic artists, designers, freelance writers, and editors who have been
in the business for years.

Desktop Publishing: Dollars and Sense addresses issues pertinent to small
and home business owners, such as setting prices, billing, and how to
choose clients. Anderson discusses business practices which are often
neglected by small desktop publishing businesses, such as marketing
strategies, and answers questions most often asked by people starting
their own business, including how to choose a name and how to discern and
avoid illegal business practices. He suggests ways to find a business
base, define a market niche, and handle legal aspects of copyright and
libel. Anderson also offers advice on how to acquire the appropriate
technology.

Scott Anderson has been involved with desktop publishing since its early
days, exploring it first as a hobby and then as a business. A writer and
editor for 25 years, he spent nearly 15 years as a journalist in Alaska,
Idaho, and Washington. Among the magazines he has contributed to are
Alaska Magazine and Sports Illustrated. Former editor of the Kodiak Daily
Mirror, Anderson has also been the owner and publisher of two small
newspapers.
