SYBASE JOINS PETROTECHNICAL OPEN SOFTWARE CORPORATION

Plays an Integral Role in Developing Customer-Oriented Open Systems
Software Standards

EMERYVILLE, CA, May 24, 1993 - Sybase, Inc. today announced that it has
joined the Petrotechnical Open Software Corporation (POSC). As a member,
Sybase will help define an open systems software integration platform for
Exploration and Production (E&P) of technical applications in the oil and
gas industry. Sybase is a major supplier to the petrochemical industry,
and through its POSC membership will continue to work toward an open
systems environment. POSC was formed in 1990 in an effort to standardize
data management within the petroleum industry.

Sybase, Inc. is a leading developer of enterprise client/server relational
database management systems and supplies its product to corporations such
as BP Exploration, Chevron Canada, Shell Oil, and PEMEX. POSC is a
non-profit membership corporation dedicated to facilitate open computing
technology for the E&P segment of the international petroleum industry.
The open platform POSC supports is a set of standard interfaces between
petrochemical software applications, database management systems,
workstations, and users.

Sybase vice president of marketing, Stu Schuster, said, "Sybase is
committed to meeting the integration needs and standards for industry
organizations, such as POSC. POSC is an important standards organization,
and the petroleum industry is a key component of our customer base. The
rapid growth and acceptance of open systems and distributed computing in
the petroleum industry will allow MIS professionals, engineers and
scientists to concentrate more on the oil business and expect greater
productivity gains."

Dan Turner, president of POSC, said, "We are extremely pleased that a
technology leader such as Sybase has joined POSC to help us work towards
an open systems software platform. The oil industry is looking to open
systems to take advantage of the opportunities that are happening in the
computer world today, and having Sybase as a member of POSC will help us
to get closer to our mission."

John Cross, the general manager of global information technology at BP
Exploration, Inc., a founding member of POSC, said, "We believe in POSC's
mission, and look forward to working with Sybase to implement the software
standards of the international petroleum industry."

By joining POSC, Sybase will work with other companies, including software
and hardware manufacturers, petroleum companies, universities, government,
and research institutions to minimize or eliminate information management
problems by providing common data-application software, hardware, and
user-application communications.

Sybase is committed to working with its customers to provide solutions
adhering to software industry standards. Joining POSC supports Sybase's
commitment to standards organizations such as its affiliations with: the
ANSI SQL Committee, SQL Access Group, Open Software Foundation (OSF), and
Sybase's relationship with Microsoft Corporation to provide Open Database
Connectivity (ODBC) -- Microsoft's implementation of the SQL Access
Group's Call Level Interface (CLI) specification, which enables access to
a variety of heterogeneous SQLbased data sources.
