Bear Rock Technologies Releases New Bar Code Reader
New Software Utility Included; Increased Functionality

(May 13, 1993) -- CodeScan 3000+, the newest generation of fully featured,
low-cost bar code readers for PCs and RS-232 terminals, is now available
from Bear Rock Technologies.

CodeScan 3000+ reads bar code data directly into the computer application
as if it were typed from the keyboard. CodeScan 3000+ includes a new
software utility which adds a high level of intelligence to scanning bar
code data. The reader can be configured from the computer screen or by
scanning bar codes. Users can create and edit macros and perform
conditional formatting on scanned data from the PC. This means that
characters in the bar code can be deleted, inserted and changed as they
are scanned in.

The new bar code reader also features a new RJ-45 magstripe connector on
the front of the reader which permits a magstripe reader to be connected
by cable. Magstripe readers for CodeScan 3000+ have three-foot cables,
allowing the credit card to be read on a countertop with the CodeScan
3000+ stored below and out of sight. CodeScan 3000+ supports Track I,
Track II or dual track, and can read magstripe cards in both directions.

Along with the magstripe support, an additional jack is available for
connection to a slot reader, CCD reader, laser or wand. This is useful in
retail situations where products are being scanned and a credit card is
used for payment.

Other new features include:

* Magstripe macro. Permits formatting of magstripe data so that users can
specify the various data elements individually, output them in any
sequence and insert characters into the output as required.

* Conversion macro. Users can define a macro to specify editing of the
output data. Characters in the bar code can be deleted, inserted or
changed as they are scanned in.

* Foreign keyboard support. Support for ten new languages has been added,
bringing the total to fifteen. This includes French, Spanish and German.

* Laser decoding. Improved decoding speed and reduction of misreads when
using lasers.

CodeScan 3000+ is simple enough to be used by people who are unfamiliar
with bar code reading equipment. It can be installed without tools and
used within moments after it is taken out of the box. It can be configured
for use with PC/XTs, PC/ATs, PS/2s, RS-232 terminals/CPUs, portable
computers and PCs with nondetachable keyboards. A simple change of the
back panel converts for use between PCs and RS-232 terminals.

CodeScan 3000+ comes complete with a one-piece polycarbonate
Hewlett-Packard wand. This high-performance wand is designed to read the
widest range of bar codes printed on dot matrix, thermal and laser
printers.

Suggested retail price for CodeScan 3000+ PC version is $345; the serial
version retails for $395. CodeScan 3000+ and all options are available
directly from Bear Rock Technologies or its authorized resellers. CodeScan
3000+ is manufactured in the USA, and comes with a five-year warranty.
