SYBASE DELIVERS SYSTEM 10 PRODUCTS: SQL SERVER 10, CONTROL SERVERS AND
CLIENT/SERVER INTERFACES

Seven new and enhanced products provide the high performance,
multi-standard compliance, and operational control required for enterprise
client/server computing.

SAN JOSE, CA, SYBASE User Group, April 27, 1993--Sybase, Inc., a leading
vendor of enterprise client/server software and services, today announced
availability of seven products that make up the foundation of its new
SYBASE System 10 product family. The new products are: SYBASE SQL Server
10; enhanced releases of the SYBASE Open Client/Server application
programming interfaces (SYBASE Open Client 10 and SYBASE Open Server 10);
SYBASE Embedded SQL 10 precompilers; and new and enhanced SYBASE Control
Servers 10 (Backup Server 10, SQL Monitor 10 and SA Companion 10). All
products are currently in beta and scheduled for commercial availability
in 1993.

The SYBASE System 10 family of products provides new capabilities for MIS
organizations building enterprise client/server applications. The SYBASE
products announced today provide new functionality in three key areas:
high performance, multi-standard compliance, and operational control in a
distributed environment.

According to Sybase president and chief executive officer, Mark Hoffman,
"The products announced today are designed to meet the primary needs of
companies migrating to, or expanding the use of, client/server computing.
Companies worldwide are rapidly building client/server applications that
run their businesses. Their primary concern is achieving the performance,
security and control of the mainframe in this new distributed environment.
The products we are announcing today address those concerns."

SQL Server 10

The SYBASE SQL Server is a high performance relational database server.
Based on an advanced multi-threaded database operating system
architecture, SYBASE SQL Server features include scalable high
performance, server-enforced integrity, high application availability, and
on-line distributed RDBMS capabilities. The product is designed to deliver
scalable high performance on the most cost-effective hardware, maintaining
high transaction and query throughput while supporting large numbers of
users.

The SYBASE SQL Server product has been shipping since 1987, and is
currently installed at over 7,800 Sybase-supported customer sites
worldwide. The previous version to SQL Server 10 is SQL Server Release
4.9. Applications written to previous versions of the SQL Server product
are compatible with the SQL Server 10 release. Customers can upgrade
applications with no conversion necessary.

What's New

* Performance: The SQL Server 10 product provides several new performance
improvements, achieved through enhancing Sybase's cost-based optimizer and
other features. Specific improvements, measured through internal tests and
customer feedback, include:

* Doubling the speed of sort and index creation;
* The database consistency checker is three times faster;
* Bulk load is seven times faster.

In addition, the SQL Server 10 product comes bundled with SYBASE Backup
Server software (described below under Control Servers) which enhances its
very large database support to provide high-speed back-up, loading and
recovery capabilities. These overall performance enhancements maintain
Sybase's position as the leading choice for high volume, high performance
OLTP applications.

Myke Miller, manager at Andersen Consulting, commented on Sybase's
performance. "We've developed a Passenger Revenue Accounting (PRA) System
for use by major airlines that supports in excess of 1,000 users. For this
application, which has very tight batch schedules and large volumes--about
400,000 transactions per day -SYBASE is the only product that can meet our
needs. We are basically replacing the mainframe with the PRA
application."

* Multi-Standard Compliance: The SYBASE SQL Server 10 product is 100%
compatible with ANSI/ISO Standard SQL-89, including declarative
referential integrity and cursor support, and passed the NIST (National
Institute for Standards Testing) test for ANSI SQL-89 in October, 1992. In
addition, The SYBASE SQL Server 10 release is the first RDBMS to be
compliant with entry-level ANSI/ISO SQL-92.

SYBASE SQL Server 10 software also supports other government and industry
standards. It is compliant with the C2 level of trust as specified by the
United States National Computer Security Center's (NCSC) requirements,
which conforms to national and international security standards. A B1
version of the product will be available later this year. And the SQL
Server 10 software will support XA, the X/Open Consortium's predominant
protocol standard for coordinating distributed heterogeneous transactions.
(See attached release for more information).

"Sybase's support of emerging standards including internationalization--
makes our development efforts much easier," said Ken Morris, vice
president of development and co-founder at PeopleSoft, a leading Human
Resources application vendor. "For example, Sybase's compliance with ANSI
resulted in feature enhancements which have optimized porting our payroll
and financial applications to SQL Server."

* Operational Control: New control features bundled in the SQL Server 10
product include a configurable audit trail for greater assurance,
chargeback accounting, and an automated routine log dump. SYBASE Backup
Server also provides additional operational control features, which are
listed in the next section.

Open Client/Server Interfaces

The SYBASE Open Client/Server Interfaces are open application programming
interfaces (API) that support open integration and are the first to
provide access to any data source, as well as the ability to invoke
heterogeneous applications and services through a common application
programming interface. The SYBASE Open Server product is the only server
API that enables integration of disparate data sources, server
applications, and application services (i.e real-time data feeds,
messaging services and gateways to heterogeneous data sources). The SYBASE
Open Client product is a client API used to enable third party products or
3GL programs to access SQL Server and Open Server software. Open Client
and Open Server have been available since 1989.

What's New

The SYBASE Open Client 10 and SYBASE Open Server 10 products have been
enhanced to take advantages of new capabilities in the SQL Server 10
release. In addition, they have new capabilities to provide higher
performance and standards compliance in their own right.

* Performance: Open Client 10 and Open Server 10 have been optimized for
higher network performance. This is accomplished through the ability to
configure data packets to enhance the transfer of large amounts of data
such as bulk data and binary large objects (BLOBS) for client to server
and server to server communications. In addition, the Open Client release
now provides a cursor array interface for rapid transfer of multi-row
query results to clients.

* Multi-Standard Compliance: The SYBASE Open Client 10 release now delivers
"standards-transparent" functionality. It provides an architecture that
allows for native support of multiple native application programming
interfaces such as Microsoft's ODBC, Borland's IDAPI, and Sybase's
DB-Library. With standards-transparency, customers can build applications
writing to any standard they choose, and the Open Client 10 release will
handle the translations to the other industry standards. The benefits to
customers include simplified application development, improved portability
and greater interoperability between tools, applications, networks and
servers.

Stewart Schuster, Sybase vice president of marketing commented, "Customers
today are faced with 'standards alphabet soup.' When writing client/server
applications, they must take into account different API's, data stream
formats and network protocols. The multi-standards compliance of our Open
Client product eliminates the confusion. Our customers can pick the
standard they want, write to it, and Open Client handles the complexity."

Embedded SQL 10 Precompilers

With System 10, Sybase is announcing SYBASE Embedded SQL 10 precompilers
for C, Cobol and Ada. SYBASE Embedded SQL 10 precompilers are programming
tools used by customers and third party vendors to write custom
applications for SYBASE SQL Server databases. Based on ISO/ANSI SQL
standards, Embedded SQL precompilers offer a high-level standard interface
that is consistent across multiple databases, allowing developers to write
custom applications that are easily portable across different relational
databases.

SYBASE Control Servers

The SYBASE Control Server family for SYBASE System 10 was designed to
provide operational control in distributed environments. The family
currently consists of four products, three of which are being announced
today: 1) SYBASE Backup Server 10 product, a new product, features high
performance, efficient backup, loading, and recovery capabilities; 2)
SYBASE SQL Monitor 10 software, a new product, provides for remote
monitoring and tuning of the performance of client/server applications; 3)
SA Companion 10 software provides system and database administration
functionality.

SYBASE Backup Server 10

SYBASE Backup Server software provides high performance backup, loading and
recovery for very large databases, with control functions for both local
and remote backup. Early internal tests have demonstrated that customers
can back up and restore at a rate of 10 gigabytes per hour with almost no
impact on applications running at the time. Other benefits include
round-the-clock control over multi-hundred gigabyte databases, lights-out
operations, and recovery for site outages and disaster recovery.

SQL Monitor 10

SYBASE SQL Monitor software simplifies RDBMS application monitoring and
tuning. It diagnoses problems and eliminates bottlenecks through both
local and remote monitoring of client/server databases. Monitoring occurs
through real-time graphic displays regarding transaction activity, CPU,
device and memory utilization, and network traffic. SQL Monitor is the
first product on the market for distributed client/server database
performance monitoring.

SA Companion 10

SYBASE SA Companion 10 software provides systems and database
administration functionality. SA Companion has been available since May,
1990. This new version now supports remote server management and the new
functions provided by SQL Server 10 software. In addition, it features an
enhanced interface for reduced training time.
