SYBASE PLANS TO INTEGRATE XA, DCE, AND DME TECHNOLOGY STANDARDS WITH SYSTEM
10 ENTERPRISE CLIENT/SERVER PRODUCTS

Key Standards Form Part of Open Strategy of SYBASE System 10 Product
Family

EMERYVILLE, CA, April 27, 1993 -- Sybase, Inc. today announced plans for
its customers to test the feasibility and benefits of three important open
systems standards as part of the SYBASE System 10 product family. The
three standards include: X/OPEN's XA standard, the Open Software
Foundation's (OSF) Distributed Computing Environment (DCE); and the OSF
Distributed Management Environment (DME). The combined standards form the
basis for an open, distributed computing environment that users can
leverage to more easily integrate heterogeneous applications. As part of
Sybase's delivery plan, customers looking to incorporate these standards
into their computing environments will be able to test the feasibility and
benefits and contribute to Sybase's overall integration plan.

Stu Schuster, vice president of marketing at Sybase, said, "Our customers
have expressed an interest in incorporating these important standards into
their environments, while preserving the investment they have made in
SYBASE as well as other technologies. We are providing our customers with
alpha versions of SYBASE products working with these standards to gauge
their feedback and provide assistance in the eventual integration. We plan
to announce availability as soon as customer testing is completed."

XA Compliance

XA is the X/Open Consortium's predominant protocol standard for
coordinating distributed, heterogeneous transactions. Several transaction
processing monitors are available which use this protocol to manage
transactions that span multiple servers. Examples include: Transarc's
Encina, IBM CICS 6000, USL Tuxedo, NCR Top End, and Siemens U. With
Sybase's alpha version, the SYBASE SQL Server 10 product can participate
in transactions managed by XA Compliant TP Monitors, and a Sybase Open
Client application can initiate such transactions making use of a TP
Monitor.

Sybase plans to provide an Open Client XA Interface option available for
use with XA-compliant transaction processing (TP) Monitors. The Open
Client XA Interface option will map directly to the SYBASE two-phase
commit service that has been offered by Sybase since its first product was
released in 1987.

DCE Integration

DCE was developed by the Open Software Foundation to provide a common set
of directory, security, timing and network runtime services for use in a
distributed environment.

The integration with OSF's DCE will provide Sybase customers with a
consistent environment to develop and use distributed applications. An
application will be able to utilize current SYBASE programming interfaces
while also using the naming, security, timing and network runtime services
of DCE. These services are being adopted by hardware and network vendors
to provide a common environment for application developers and will
provide SYBASE applications greater location transparency and enterprise
security. The DCE alpha version is being tested in customer laboratories
over the next several months and will be demonstrated at OSF's
Interoperability Challenge '93 Event in Boston on May 26th and 27th.
General availability will be announced based on completion of customer
testing activities and customer feedback.

DME Support

The Open Software Foundation also developed the DME environment to provide
a standard framework for the management of systems, networks, and
databases.

Sybase is using Tivoli's Management Framework, selected by OSF to provide a
key component of DME, to develop administration and control products for
heterogeneous, client/server environments. Sybase is committed to using
the DME framework when it is commercially available. By using the Tivoli
framework, SYBASE administration and control products will be able to
interoperate with other Tivoli Systems Administration and Control products
for networks and systems. As the first step in this effort, Sybase is
developing a new SYBASE Control Servers release using the Tivoli
Management Framework.
