NEC TECHNOLOGIES' INTRODUCES IMAGE SERIES DESKTOP PC AND EXPRESS/II FAMILY
OF SERVER SYSTEMS BASED ON INTEL'S PENTIUM PROCESSOR AND PCI LOCAL BUS
NEC

Boxborough, Mass, May 17, 1993--Building upon its long-standing and
strategic relationship with Intel Corporation, NEC Technologies, Inc.
today announced that it will expand its award-winning Image Series of fast
graphics desktop PCs and the next generation of the popular Express family
of servers to support Intel's new Pentium processor. The new Pentium
processor-based systems will be unveiled at COMDEX/Spring in Atlanta on
May 24, 1993.

"The power, high performance, and technology leadership of Intel's Pentium
processor represents a true technology breakthrough. NEC Technologies has
made a significant research and development investment to optimize our
desktop and server products for this technology," said James Berrett,
chief operating executive of NEC Technologies, Inc. "Our parent company,
Japan's NEC Corporation, also has aggressive plans to develop Pentium
processor-based products, thereby qualifying NEC as a worldwide leader in
the application of this technology."

"NEC is providing a balanced 64-bit approach as the best way to fully
exploit Pentium processor technology. By combining the power of the
Pentium processor with the versatility of the PCI Local Bus Specification,
NEC is making a total commitment to high-performance computing," said Paul
Otellini, Senior Vice President, Intel Corporation. "NEC is a classic
example of an organization that is investing significant research and
development resources to tap the true potential of the Pentium
processor."

Image P60 and NEC's Marketing Strategy for Pentium Processor-Based
Desktops

The Pentium processor-based Image P60 represents the latest addition to the
recently-introduced Image Series. Combining the power of the Pentium
processor with the high-performance of the Peripheral Component Interface
(PCI) local bus, the Image P60 provides advanced business users with
superior graphics performance.

The PCI EISA-based Image P60 features a 60MHz Pentium processor with an
optimized, native 64-bit design, SIMM memory expansion up to 192MB, Fast
SCSI-2, Super I/O, and integrated audio. To exploit the Pentium processor
Burst Mode, NEC has implemented an optimized cache subsystem into the
Image P60 that offers users 256KB 9ns Burst Mode (synchronous) SRAM
write-back cache.

As part of its marketing strategy for Pentium processor-based desktop PCs,
NEC offers users two ways to take advantage of this technology. The
existing Image Series--Image 425, Image 433, and Image 466--offers users a
32-bit upgrade strategy whereby universal Pentium processor upgrade
compatibility is achieved via the use of a 238-pin ZIF socket, allowing
migration to Pentium OverDrive processing power. The second method, a
balanced 64-bit strategy, is achieved with native Pentium processor-based
systems such as the Image P60. This 64-bit approach allows optimized
Pentium processor performance, a full 64-bit architecture and date
transfers, Burst Mode capability, and the PCI local bus specification.

NEC, the innovator of local bus video, further enhances its Image Video
technology in the Image P60 by implementing a powerful PCI local bus
graphics subsystem that features 2MB of VRAM, 1024 x 768 high color, an
amazing high-performance graphics accelerator with linear frame buffer and
full PCI burst write support.

"Systems with full 64-bit capability and the high-speed PCI local bus for
integrated features are the right kind of systems to showcase the Pentium
processor. This unique graphics subsystem combination provides the best
video subsystem value of any Pentium processor-based system in its class,"
commented Berrett.

Express/II P661LT and Express/II P662LT and NEC's Marketing Strategy for
Pentium Processor-based Servers

Developed for IS managers working to downsize or rightsize their
organizations, the high-end of NEC's next generation of server
products--the Express/II Series--includes two Pentium processor-based
systems, the Express/II P661LT and the Express/II P662LT.

The Express/II P661LT is a single Pentium processor-based system operating
at 66MHz. With 256KB of integrated secondary write back cache, a maximum
of 384MB system RAM, integrated dual channel SCSI-2 interface, and the
recently announced EISA-EMB supporting EISA bus throughput at 66MB/S, the
Express/II P661LT has been optimized for maximum system performance. The
Express/II P662LT features a dual processing design to accommodate ECC
system memory and two Pentium processors operating at 66MHz.

"We've designed the Express/II P661LT and Express/II P662LT to be optimized
for use as high-end file servers and mid-range application servers," added
Berrett.

NEC offers users a three tier upgrade strategy for Pentium processor-based
servers. The Express/II 486-based models, also slated for announcement at
COMDEX/Spring, support the OverDrive processor, while the Express/II
P661LT and Express/II P662LT systems are each OverDrive ready to
accommodate future Intel performance enhancements. In addition, the single
processor Express/II P661LT is fully upgradable to dual processing
capability to provide additional power and performance.

Availability, Pricing, and Distribution Information

Sold through NEC's extensive nationwide network of authorized resellers,
the Express/II P661LT, and Express/II P662LT will be available next month,
while the Image P60 will be available later in the Summer of 1993. Pricing
information will be disclosed at that time.
