IntelliTalk Software Available
IntelliTools Announces New Talking Word-Processor

April 15, 1993--Richmond, Calif.--IntelliTools, Inc., manufacturer of the
award-winning IntelliKeys keyboard as announced the release of its new
lntelliTalk software program.

IntelliTalk, which is available for both Macintosh and the Apple II family
of computers, is a writing and communication tool that talks. This
flexible, easy to-use software program speaks letters, words, or sentences
tor nothing) as you type. It also allows the user to review what's been
written--reading back a sentence, a paragraph, even a whole page.
IntelliTalk is ideal for the student who needs a simple talking
wordprocessor or for the nonverbal person who wants to use IntelliKeys as
a communication device. Each version of IntelliTalk sells for $39.95 and
is available from authorized dealers or directly from IntelliTools.

The Macintosh version of IntelliTalk uses Mac's built-in MacinTalk speech--
nothing extra is required. IntelliTalk works in the same way as any
standard Macintosh word-processing program. Type, and then use the Font,
Size, and Style menus to change the attributes of the text. Open, save,
and print documents using selections from the File menu.

IntelliTalk differs from similar products in two important ways. Firstly,
it has two very different modes of operation: Pictures Menus and Standard
Menus. The Picture Menus mode is perfect for the early writer. Menus have
pictures to illustrate what each selection does, and some advanced
commands are not displayed, thus providing clear and simple menu choices.
With Picture Menus, changing the font, size, style, or color of text
affects the entire document immediately, so there's no need to highlight
the text first.

Using the Standard Menus mode, the menu pictures are not displayed; more
choices are available in the menus; and text must be selected in order to
change its font, style, size, or color, allowing the advanced user to
create visually complex documents. Additionally, any command available in
Standard Menus, but not shown in the Picture Menus, is still available in
the Picture Menus mode by using its command-key equivalent.

Secondly, pronunciation can be edited with IntelliTalk. While most speech
software programs use a larg number of rules to help them read English,
sometimes these rules are insufficient, and words are not pronounced
correctly. To compensate for this, IntelliTalk maintains a dictionary of
pronunciation exceptions. With this Exception Table, the user can adapt
pronunciation so speech is phonetic.

The Apple II version of IntelliTalk works with the Echo speech synthesizer,
which is required, but not included. The speech settings (letter, word,
sentence) can be combined, or the user can have IntelliTalk remain silent
during typing. IntelliTalk for the Apple II works the same as most common
Apple II word-processing programs: type and words appear orl the screen;
use arrow keys to move through text; use the delete key to delete the
previous character. This version also has an Exception Table for editing
words to allow phonetic pronunciation.

IntelliTalk takes on additional power when paired with a programmable
keyboard such as IntelliKeys or a Unicorn Keyboard (both manufactured by
IntelliTools). Used with IntelliKeys and IntelliKeys Overlay Maker
(another IntelliTools software product which allows the creation of custom
overlays), IntelliTalk makes it possible to create talking communications
activities. This feature is particularly useful for the nonverbal person
or for use with young students learning to read.

IntelliTools is the new name for Unicorn Engineering, which was founded in
1979. The privately held company designs and manufactures IntelliKeys, the
Unicorn Keyboard, and software for the early childhood, education,
business, and disabilities markets.
