The GUI Guide
International Terminology for the Windows Interface
European Edition

Software developers with an eye to expanding into global markets can now
turn to a handy reference and electronic glossary from Microsoft Press
called THE GUI GUIDE: INTERNATIONAL TERMINOLOGY FOR THE WINDOWS
INTERFACE.

Many U.S.-originated software products have the potential to generate more
than half their revenues abroad. Maintaining consistency with standard
Microsoft Windows operating system-based programs is key to creating
intuitive, user-friendly applications for sale around the world. THE GUI
GUIDE provides terminology translations and proposed guidelines for
developing or localizing Windows-based applications for Europe--the
largest market for computer software.

Part 1 of the book describes the main components of the Microsoft Windows
graphical user interface (GUI) and offers localization guidelines.
Programmers will find suggestions for sizing menus and dialog boxes;
standardizing toolbars, rulers, and progress indicators; localizing menu
names and access keys; and definitions of terms for dialog box controls,
user actions, and object linking and embedding (OLE).

In part Part 2, hundreds of GUI components--listed both by category and
alphabetically--are translated into 14 European languages: French, German,
Italian, Spanish, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, Hungarian, Norwegian,
Polish, Portuguese, Russian, and Swedish.

And to make localization faster and easier, the accompanying 720KB 3.5-inch
disk contains all the terminology translations in both Microsoft Excel and
Microsoft Windows Write formats. Ordering information for one 1.2-MB
5.25-inch disk is also included. Microsoft Windows operating system
version 3.1 is required. To display and print the Czech, Hungarian, and
Polish terminology, the user needs Windows 3.1 for Central and Eastern
Europe. To display and print the Russian terminology, the user needs the
Russian (Cyrillic) version of Windows 3.1.

Appendixes include illustrations of keyboard layouts in 14 languages;
tables of national standards for time, currency, and other elements; and
tables of various character sets. A comprehensive index helps readers
quickly locate information on any topic in the book.
