SYBASE SQL Server and Open Client/Server Interfaces provide enterprise-wide
solution that integrates open systems with legacy applications

Emeryville, CA, April 26, 1993 -- Sybase, Inc. today announced that its
SYBASE SQL Server and SYBASE Open Client/Server Interfaces products have
been chosen by the Swedish Telecom Group as the standard relational
database management system (RDBMS) products for the utility's migration to
an open, client/server information systems architecture. Another key
software element of the Swedish Telecom strategy is UniAccess from Applied
Information Sciences (AIS), an implementation of the SYBASE Open Server
Interfaces connectivity product for accessing legacy data and applications
on UNISYS mainframes.

The Swedish Telecom Group is a $5 billion company and Sweden's primary
supplier of telecommunications products and services. The new open systems
strategy is being implemented by Swedish Telecom Data Services, the data
processing services arm of the Swedish Telecom Group, and is expected to
exceed $100 million total in project costs through 1996.

The SYBASE SQL Server product is a leading client/server-based RDBMS for
on-line, enterprise-wide applications. The SYBASE Open Client/Server
Interfaces are open application programming interfaces (APIs) that offer
customers unique features for integrating non-SYBASE data, applications,
and application services.

"We recognized that replacing our 10- to 15-year-old systems and moving to
an open, client/server architecture was critical to the long-term success
of our organization," said Mikael von Otter, director of beta services at
Swedish Telecom. "But for now, we still need to be able to rely on the
high availability and user capacity of our mainframes. Only Sybase and AIS
were able to provide that vital combination of client/server architecture
and technologies for integrating with our legacy applications, to help us
meet both objectives."

"Telecommunications is a very important market for Sybase, because we can
provide the interoperability and open architecture for the
information-intensive, mission-critical environments telecommunications
companies operate in. It's the reason why so many companies are
standardizing on SYBASE," said Stewart Schuster, vice president of
marketing at Sybase. "For companies like Swedish Telecom, moving to open
systems is not viable unless they can continue to leverage their vast
investments in mission-critical mainframe applications. Their selection of
Sybase and AIS products is a strong endorsement of our strategy to provide
the technologies for client/server applications that span the enterprise."

The Migration Process

Swedish Telecom holds a vast majority of the telecommunications market in
Sweden, with more than 45,000 employees and six million subscribers. Early
in 1992, the company began its migration from a mainframe-based
information systems infrastructure to one based on open systems. Swedish
Telecom Data Services sought to implement an IS architecture that would
allow it to capitalize on existing information assets, but could be
dynamically scaled to fit varying needs for capacity and flexibility. The
software contract was awarded to EMT AB, a distributor based in Stockholm,
Sweden, for a solution based on SYBASE SQL Server and SYBASE Open
Client/Server Interfaces products as well as AIS's UniAccess.

In a phased migration over the next several years, Swedish Telecom plans to
integrate IBM- and UNISYS-based mainframe applications into a
client/server environment configured with Hewlett-Packard servers and
workstations running the SYBASE SQL Server product. The utility has
contracted with Hewlett-Packard's Professional Services Organization to
provide systems integration and consulting services for the project.

The combination of SQL Server, Open Client/Server Interfaces, and UniAccess
products will allow client applications and tools running on PCs,
Macintoshes, Digital VAX systems or UNIX systems to access servers located
throughout Swedish Telecom, and interoperate with the company's
mainframe-based legacy applications. In effect, UniAccess will turn
Swedish Telecom's six UNISYS mainframes into powerful, open servers. In
this way, the mainframes will be integrated into the open systems
architecture, but will still provide the mission-critical hardware
performance that Swedish Telecom relies on: namely, near-100% availability
and support for up to 10,000 concurrent users with subsecond response
times.

SYBASE SQL Server

SYBASE SQL Server is a high-performance relational database server based on
an advanced multi-threaded database operating system architecture. The
SYBASE SQL Server product features scalable high performance,
server-enforced integrity, high application availability, and on-line
distributed RDBMS capabilities. It is designed to deliver scalable high
performance on the most cost-effective hardware, maintaining high
transaction and query throughput while supporting large numbers of users.
The company is currently shipping SYBASE SQL Server, Release 4.9.

SYBASE Open Client/Server Interfaces

The SYBASE Open/Client Server Interface products provide a distributed
architecture for interoperability between heterogeneous tools,
applications, data sources, and network services. These SYBASE products
support open integration and are the first to provide access to any data
source, as well as the ability to invoke heterogeneous applications and
services through a common application programming interface.

The SYBASE Open Server Interface is the only server API that enables
integration of data sources, server applications, and application
services. SYBASE Open Client is a client API used to enable third party
products or 3GL programs to access the SQL Server and Open Server
applications.

UniAccess

The UniAccess product suite is a licensed implementation of the SYBASE
Client/Server architecture developed by AIS under a technology transfer
agreement with Sybase. Just like the SYBASE Open Server implementation for
IBM mainframes, the UniAccess product suite integrates Unisys mainframes
with the Sybase Client/Server architecture.

Applied Information Sciences, Inc.

Founded in 1982, AIS is a technical services and products company
specializing in client/server architecture and open systems migration. AIS
markets UniAccess directly, through distributors overseas and through
co-marketing relationships with many third parties. AIS offers a full
range of technical services to assist customers in modernizing or
implementing enterprise-wide, distributed transaction processing
architectures. The company is privately-held, and is headquartered in
Landover, MD.

Sybase, Inc.

Sybase, Inc. (NASDAQ: SYBS) develops and markets a leading family of
client/server-based software products and services for on-line,
enterprise-wide applications. Sybase's integrated family of software
includes servers, tools, connectivity, and administration/control products
that provide complete desktop to mainframe solutions. Headquartered in
Emeryville, CA, Sybase markets its products worldwide through its direct
