Running MS-DOS, 6th edition
Microsoft Press Announces All-New Edition of #1 Bestseller

RUNNING MS-DOS 6th edition--the all-new edition of the world's favorite
guide to the MS-DOS operating system--now covers MS-DOS 6.

When powerful IBM and then-tiny Microsoft sat down to chat about a new kind
of personal computer over a decade ago, no one outside Microsoft would
have guessed that the Microsoft disk operating system (MS-DOS) would
become a software standard for an entire industry.

Similarly, when Microsoft Press asked Van Wolverton to write the first
edition of RUNNING MS-DOS in 1983, few suspected that a book with such an
unassuming tide was destined to become the best-selling computer book for
MS-DOS of all time, with sales of more than 3 million copies in 25
different languages.

Today this genuine classic--like the software--just keeps getting better
and better. For many computer users, it's the only book they'll ever need.
The author gently teaches beginners how to install and start the MS-DOS
operating system, enter and edit commands, and work with directories,
files, and disks. More experienced computer users will discover how a
solid grounding in computer fundamentals will help them work smarter with
other applications spreadsheets, word processors, databases--and even the
Microsoft Windows' operating system!

Van's straightforward style and hands-on approach are the keys to MS-DOS
mastery. In this all-new edition, his clear explanations and real-world
examples help readers get the most from the broad range of version 6
built-in utilities, improved memory management, and data compression
capabilities. Upgrading users will learn about all the new MS-DOS 6
features, including:

* DoubleSpace, the data-compression utility that can effectively
double the capacity of a hard disk
* Defrag, the tool that provides a simple way to defragment
  a hard disk
* New and easier ways to back up and protect files
* MemMaker, the new memory manager that helps provide more
memory for MS-DOS and Windows-based applications
* The new anti-virus tool
* And much, much more

Readers will also find solid coverage of earlier MS-DOS versions back to
version 3.3. In addition, the command reference section of RUNNING MS-DOS,
6th edition, is one of the most complete MS-DOS command reference sections
available. A handy glossary provides information about key terms, and a
comprehensive index helps users quickly find information about any MS-DOS
topic in the book.
