EXTENDED SYSTEMS' ADVANTAGE XBASE SERVER BRINGS CLIENT/SERVER PERFORMANCE
AND FILE INTEGRITY TO MULTI-USER CLIPPER APPLICATIONS ON NOVELL NETWARE
3.11/4.0

Boise, ID, April 12, 1993 -- Extended Systems, Inc. announced today that it
will release the Advantage Xbase Server for Novell NetWare 3.11/4.0 next
month. The Advantage Xbase Server brings the multi-user performance and
file integrity benefits of client/server processing to Clipper
applications without having to rewrite a single line of code. The
Advantage Xbase Server consists of a Clipper Replacable Database Driver
(RDD) and a NetWare Loadable Module (NLM). The RDD integrates seamlessly
into existing Clipper 5.x applications, and the NLM runs on a NetWare 3.11
or 4.0 file server. The Advantage Xbase Server is the result of a
technology sharing agreement between Extended Systems and SuccessWare,
where Extended Systems has integrated SuccessWare's Replaceable Database
Driver technology for Clipper 5.x (SIx Driver) with a NetWare Loadable
Module (NLM).

Increases Performance For Multi-user Clipper Applications

The Advantage Xbase Server optimizes multi-user performance by
intelligently dividing database operations between the client and the
Server. Traditional Xbase database applications send all the data across
the network to be processed on the workstation. With the Advantage Xbase
Server's client/server architecture, network traffic is reduced by
processing requests on the file Server, where the data is stored. The
Advantage Xbase Server also uses multi-threaded and shared memory designs
to accept and execute multiple users requests simultaneously. This
minimizes Server memory usage while optimizing performance.

To further enhance performance, the Advantage Xbase Server employs an
intelligent lock management system. This locking scheme allows
simultaneous multi-user index and data access. The system retains
compatibility with the existing Clipper locking mechanism. The result is
significantly greater system throughput in multi-user applications with
absolutely no code changes.

The Advantage Xbase Server also utilizes Mach SIx query optimization to
improve the performance of FOR condition queries by up to 1000 times. Like
FoxPro's Rushmore technology, the Mach SIx query optimizer uses bitmaps
and index shortcuts to dramatically increase query performance.

Improves Database File Integrity

With the Advantage Xbase Integrity System, file corruption due to
workstation failure can be eliminated. Now database administrators and
programmers are no longer forced to manage index or data file corruption
resulting from an interruption in communication between the workstation
and the file server.

During traditional interaction between the workstation and server, your
database is open to corruption. If the workstation fails during an update
because of a reboot, power failure or memory problem, index integrity and
database integrity can be compromised. The Advantage Xbase Integrity
System can ensure that every database update runs to completion or doesn't
begin. The RDD interface bundles commands and transmits them to the NLM.
If any command is partially received by the NLM, it is not executed. With
the Advantage Xbase Integrity System, index integrity now depends only on
the file-server, not each workstation connected to it.

Completely Compatible With Existing Clipper Applications And Databases

The Advantage Xbase Server requires no rewriting of applications, no data
file conversions and no reeducation. By using Clipper's Replaceable
Database Driver interface, the Advantage Xbase Server integrates
seamlessly into existing Clipper 5.x applications. To receive the benefits
of the Advantage Xbase Server, simply relink existing applications with
the new library and load the NLM on the file server. The Advantage Xbase
Server's architecture ensures that no data porting is required, because it
supports the same industry standard file and index formats that Clipper
supports.

The RDD includes Auto Sensing capabilities. Auto Sensing allows a single
application to run as both a client/server application on a network (with
the Advantage Xbase Server NLM loaded) or as a standard Clipper
application on a stand-alone workstation. If the Advantage NLM is
available, database commands are processed on the server. If the Advantage
NLM is not available, your application transparently reverts back to
standard workstation command processing.

Compatible With Existing Novell NetWare 3.11 and 4.0 Networks

The Advantage Xbase Server integrates into existing Novell NetWare 3.11 or
4.0 networks without software modifications and with limited hardware
impact. The Advantage Xbase Server adheres to Novell's security system and
requires no reformatting or repartitioning of disk drives. For further
assurance of adherence to Novell specifications, the Advantage Xbase
Server will be Novell certified.

The Advantage Xbase Server does not require a dedicated PC, since server
load and memory utilization are kept to a minimum. The server' s file
handle requirements are also dramatically reduced because the NLM uses
common file handles across all users.

Advanced Application Functionality

The Advanced Functionality of the Advantage Xbase Server can be used to
extend the functionality of Clipper applications. The Advantage Xbase
Server supports the following advanced capabilities:

Compressed indexes reduce the disk space required for indexes by up to
90%.

Compound indexes reduce the number of application file handles and decrease
index corruption.

Multiple Record Locking provides more secure transaction control.

Conditional indexes and index scopes allow for more flexible views and much
higher performance than traditional filters.

Flexible Memo fields allow you to establish your own block size, reuse
empty memo blocks and store more data in a typical memo field.

Sub-indexing allows you to quickly reorder and refine an existing view.

Extended Systems has successfully designed and marketed a number of
advanced NetWare Loadable Modules. The most recent, ExtendBase, is a
client/server utility that makes indexing, reporting and querying
functions on existing Xbase databases run up to 15 times faster. Extended
Systems' products are available from its' national direct sales
organization. Extended Systems product families focus on enabling users to
increase the life, functionality and capabilities of their computer
resources by providing high-performance, reliability and ease of use.
