NSSI INTRODUCES LanSafe II for Unix Power Management Software

First Real-Time Power Management Software Improves Reliability of
Heterogenous Unix Networks

SAN DIEGO, April 26, 1993 - Network Security Systems, Inc., (NSSI) today
announced its LanSafe II for Unix, a power management software package,
which controls and manages power in a heterogenous network environment.
NSSI's LanSafe II for Unix brings to Unix-based servers and workstations
the ability to control power conditions to avoid equipment damage and the
loss of data in volatile memory. LanSafe II for Unix was developed
especially for the Unix environment, and unlike other programs that only
monitor the uninterruptible power supply (UPS) for a single Unix computer,
LanSafe II for Unix provides interactive management and control for all
NSSI intelligent power systems (IPS/A.I.) throughout an entire network of
workstations and servers.

LanSafe II for Unix incorporates an X Window system and Motif graphical
user interface that allows network administrators to see the status of all
power protection components on an entire network, at once, and to identify
potential power problems. Administrators can monitor, manage and configure
every power protection node from any workstation on the network, including
those at remote sites.

"Everything we do at NSSI is aimed at making heterogenous network
management simpler and more reliable. NSSI has developed LanSafe II for
Unix specifically to address these vital issues," said Bill Humphreys,
president of NSSI. "LanSafe II for Unix is designed to ensure the
integrity of data in volatile memory that is vulnerable during a power
outage. Without the security of backup power during a power outage,
investments to downsize computers can be lost in efforts to reenter data,
rerun reports, or reprocess valuable jobs. Additionally, LanSafe II for
Unix operates, looks, and feels like our Microsoft Windows product. This
should appeal to system managers."

Using the LanSafe II console, administrators can troubleshoot power
problems and monitor real-time loads, battery, and voltage status.
Pull-down menus provide the ability to change power and program settings,
conduct network-wide tests, reboot or shut down nodes, and view historical
power event logs.

If a prolonged power outage occurs, the system will begin an orderly
shutdown of the Unix network, guaranteeing data integrity and the ability
to quickly restore the system when power returns. Automatic daily hardware
self-testing and software-controlled battery preventative maintenance
procedures provide increased system life and reliability.

The exclusive LanSafe II for Unix network power management features
include:

* Automatic and orderly shutdown of all network devices without
the need for manual intervention -- critical to managing data
  integrity
* Total power management of every network device, including file
  servers and workstations
* Real-time configuration management of operating parameters,
such as transfer to backup-battery voltage ranges,
communication ports, and shutdown parameters for every device
without shutting down or rebooting the system
* Support for the X Window system and Motif graphical user
  interface
* "PowerPro" feature for setting upper and lower voltage limits,
thus customizing the hardware operation to local power
  conditions and preserving battery capacity;
* Management console, with graphical controls, that allows power
  management for the entire network
* Software controlled preventative maintenance procedures for
draining and recharging batteries, providing increased system
  life and reliability
* Online, context-sensitive, hypertext help system, modelled
after Microsoft Windows, for all console functions
* Support for SCO, SunOS, HP-UX INTERACTIVE, AT&T Unix, IBM AIX,
Solaris, DEC ULTRIX, Xenix and other platforms

The suggested U.S. list price of LanSafe II for Unix is $149 for the
single-seat version. The five-seat version is available at an introductory
price of $299. This product is available immediately.

The LanSafe family of power management software and NSSI's line of
Intelligent Power Systems combine to provide a complete fault tolerant
system. The IPS/A I. models for workstation backup include the model 300
(210 watts) priced at $299 and the model 450 (315 watts) priced at $449.
The IPS/A I. 600 (480 watts), 800 (640 watts) and 1200 (960 watts) models
are priced at $599, $799 and $1199 respectively and protect larger
workstations and servers. The entire IPS/A.I. product line is backed by a
full, two-year warranty which may be extended up to five years.
