THE MATHWORKS, WATERLOO MAPLE SOFTWARE ENTER STRATEGIC ALLIANCE

NATICK, MA/WATERLOO, ONTARIO -- Feb. 8, 1993 -- The MathWorks, Inc. and
Waterloo Maple Software (WMS) today announced a strategic marketing and
development alliance designed to produce an unprecedented technical
computing environment. This advancement, based on both companies' flagship
products -- MATLAB and Maple V -- will bring together the best in symbolic
mathematics and the best in numeric computation to dramatically expand the
computing capabilities of engineers, scientists, mathematicians,
educators, and other technical professionals.

MATLAB, developed by The MathWorks, is the most powerful interactive
numeric computation environment available today, providing a broad range
of mathematical functions, numeric and matrix computation, sparse matrix
support, visualization capabilities, sound output, graphical user
interface controls, and more.

Maple V, developed by Waterloo Maple Software, is a comprehensive
mathematical software package for performing symbolic and numeric
computations. It offers more than 2,500 functions for all levels of
computation, from exploratory learning in math education to research
problems in quantum chemistry. Maple V also provides an open architecture
that lets users see how results are determined.

"Our two firms will jointly answer the computing needs of all technical
users," said Ron Neumann, chief executive officer of WMS. "We will combine
the theoretical and practical foundation needed in the world of academia,
with the application-specific tools and industrial-strength performance
demanded by the technical professional, to create an advanced computing
solution. We will do this without any compromise to the numeric or
symbolic excellence our users have come to expect from MATLAB and Maple
V," he said.

According to John N. Little, president of The MathWorks, "The MathWorks and
Waterloo Maple Software are well regarded for the quality, robustness and
accuracy of their products in numeric and symbolic computation and
visualization. By not compromising on any capability -- speed,
application-specific tools, breadth of functionality, accuracy or ease of
use -- we will leverage off our respective strengths to provide a complete
technical computing solution."

Waterloo Maple Software is a private company founded in 1988 to market,
distribute and support MAPLE symbolic math software. The Maple software
program was created in 1980 when Professors Gaston Gonnet and Keith Geddes
of the University of Waterloo in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada joined together
to produce the first symbolic math software product for minicomputers.
Maple V is currently used by more than 100,000 engineers, scientists,
mathematicians and students worldwide, and installations include some of
the most prestigious universities in the world. Maple V is available for
many UNIX platforms, Microsoft Windows, DOS, Macintosh, NeXT, VAX/VMS, and
AmigaDOS systems.

The MathWorks, Inc., based in Natick, Mass., develops markets and supports
high-performance software for interactive numeric computation,
visualization and dynamic system simulation. The MathWorks' products are
used worldwide by more than 100,000 users at leading commercial and
government research laboratories and organizations, as well as at hundreds
of educational institutions. MATLAB is available for MS-DOS, Apple
Macintosh; Sun, HP, Digital, IBM, and Silicon Graphics workstations;
VAX/VMS computers; and Convex and Cray supercomputers.
