Apple Announces New Standard Configuration for LaserWriter Pro 600

Dateline: February 9,1993

Product Description:

In response to strong customer demand, Apple Computer, Inc. is upgrading
the standard configuration of the Apple LaserWriter Pro 600 to include 8MB
of RAM. This move makes 600 dot-per-inch (dpi) resolution and Apple's
PhotoGrade technology standard, built-in features of the printer. At its
introduction on Jan. 6, 1993, the Apple LaserWriter Pro 600 shipped with
4MB of RAM on the controller board, and was bundled with another 4MB of
RAM as a special introductory offer.

The 600 dpi Apple LaserWriter Pro 600 offers superior grayscale image
quality, high-performance throughput, extensive paper-handling
capabilities, and ease of setup and use in Macintosh Windows or mixed
environments. It is based on the 25MHz Motorola 68030 microprocessor and
includes Adobe PostScript Level 2. It is designed for small- and
large-business users seeking a cost-effective, high-volume workgroup laser
printer with excellent print quality.

Significance:

Equipping the LaserWriter Pro 600 with 8MB of RAM allows users to take
advantage of the printer's 600 dpi high-resolution printing capabilities
or PhotoGrade, Apple's advanced printing technology for near-photographic
quality grayscale images. PhotoGrade provides the equivalent of 1,000 dpi
printing with 91 levels of gray--30 percent more than was previously
available in other printers. This means that even high-end graphics
professionals can use the printers for proofing, and often final output.

Pricing and Availability:

The U.S. suggested retail price of the 8MB configuration Apple LaserWriter
Pro 600 remains the same--U.S. SRP $2,099. Pricing and availability of
this configuration may vary in other countries.

Availability:

The Apple LaserWriter Pro 600 is currently offered through authorized Apple
resellers worldwide.

System Requirements:

The Apple LaserWriter Pro 600 requires a Macintosh computer running System
6.0.5 or greater, or an MS-DOS-based personal computer running Windows 3.0
or 3.1.
