Englewood, CO, January 29...The world's first live, transcontinental
scholastic chess tournament was recently announced. A match between an
American and a German team will be played via electronic computer
transmission using Masque Publishing's new ChessNet Club Edition 2.0 for
Windows software.

ChessNet Club Edition is a communications package for playing chess that
allows clubs to play up to eight boards simultaneously using one computer
on each end, one modem and one data or phone line. The minimal hardware
requirements drastically reduce on-line costs associated with remote play.
For example, a US team can now play a live match against a club across

town for the cost of a local call, challenge a team from any other US town
for about 25 cents a game, or play against a team from Europe for less
than $1 per hour per board!

The upcoming match will pit Bradford Scholastic Chess Team from Jefferson
County, Colorado USA against the Dr. Emanuel Lasker Schule Team from
Strobeck Germany on February 6, 1993 at 9:30 AM Mountain Time; 17:30
German Time.

* Bradford Elementary School has 885 students, 80 are members
  of the chess club.
* Bradford Scholastic Chess Team won 1st place in the Elementary
Division of the 1992 Colorado Scholastic Chess League and tied
for 1st place in the 1992 Colorado State Elementary Team
  Championship games.
* Ryan Umari, Bradford's strongest player, tied for 8th place at
the 1992 US National Elementary Scholastic Championship games.
* Bradford's chess club organizer is Marilyn Umari,

The Dr. Emanuel Lasker Team

* Strobeck, located in former East Germany, is well known for its
chess enthusiasm. Of the town's 1,100 residents approximately
  800 play chess.
* The local chess club ran succesfully as a political entity in
the most recent local elections. They in fact won 6 of 15 seats
on the town council. The ensuing clout enabled them to vote in
one of their own members as Burgermeister (mayor).
* Strobeck is the only town in Germany that has chess as part of
the school curriculum. Their goal is for chess to be fun and
benefit the masses, not a search for potential grandmaster
  material.
