Apple Joins EPA's Energy Star Printers Program

CUPERTINO, California--January 28,1993--Apple Computer, Inc. will
participate in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Energy
Star program to build and market new computer printers that use less
electricity. Announced today, the EPA's printer initiative is an expansion
of Energy Star Computers, a cooperative effort between government and
industry that seeks to create a market for energy-efficient office
equipment and thereby reduce air pollution caused by power generation.

Apple and other manufacturers worked with the EPA to develop the technical
criteria for the Energy Star printers program. Printers that comply with
the program's criteria will automatically enter a low-power mode after a
period of inactivity, reducing power consumption up to 50 percent.
Beginning June 1993, units sold in the U.S. may display the Energy Star
logo, which alerts customers to the products' environmental benefits.
Apple printers developed under the program will be available worldwide.

"Apple wants to minimize the environmental impacts of our products
throughout their life cycles," said Fred Forsyth, senior vice president
and general manager, Macintosh Systems Division. "The Energy Star program
helps our customers make a positive environmental contribution and reduce
their energy costs at the same time."

In June 1992, Apple became a charter participant in the EPA's Energy Star
Computers program. Apple will introduce a range of products this year that
are expected to display the Energy Star.

It is Apple's corporate policy to do business in a manner that conserves
the environment and protects the health of its employees, customers and
the communities in which it operates. Apple believes that a comprehensive
environmental program is an essential component of business. Current
corporate programs include product grants to environmental groups,
internal recycling, environmental volunteer and education programs for
employees, a worldwide chlorofluorocarbon elimination policy, battery and
toner cartridge recycling programs for customers, environmentally
sensitive packaging, and energy-efficient products.
