Apple Selects America Online's Technology for Future Online Information
Services

CUPERTINO, California--December 4, 1992--Apple Computer, Inc. and America
Online, Inc. today announced a business agreement in which Apple will use
technologies developed by America Online in future online information
services that Apple will manage and market. The two companies also
announced that they plan to work together to develop enhancements to the
America Online services platform and to establish it as a standard.

Online information services enable people to use personal computers and
other devices to access a wide range of information, to access transaction
services such as electronic shopping or banking, and to communicate with
each other.

Under the agreement, America Online has granted Apple a non-exclusive
license to use the America Online services platform to provide
Apple-branded online services. America Online will receive a royalty based
on usage.

Apple OnLine Services (AOS), the information services business unit in
Apple's Personal Interactive Electronics Division, plans to incorporate
the America Online technologies into enhanced versions of AppleLink,
Apple's global electronic communications and information service. AOS also
will use this technology for other Apple online services that will be
introduced in the future.

"This agreement is an example of how companies must combine technologies
and market strengths to establish standards in the emerging digital
information age," said Peter Friedman, director of Apple OnLine Services.
"America Online's services platform provides us with unique, advanced and
scalable technology. This, combined with Apple's technology and market
position, gives us a solid basis to continue growing our worldwide,
Apple-branded information services business."

Stephen M. Case, president of America Online, said, "To date, our focus has
been attracting additional subscribers to the America Online service, and
to support this effort we have invested heavily in technology to create a
flexible and easy to use online services platform. We'll continue to focus
on increasing our own subscriber base, but we feel the time is now right
to broaden our role in the online services market by licensing our
services platform to others. Through this collaboration with Apple, we
believe we can accelerate the adoption of a common services platform."

Headquartered in Vienna, Virginia, America Online, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMER) is
the leading independent provider of online services to consumers in the
United States. Founded in 1985, the company offers subscribers a wide
variety of services, including electronic mail, conferencing, news, stock
quotes, software, computing support and online classes. The services can
be accessed from a broad range of personal computers using America
Online's proprietary icon-based windowing software. The company completed
an initial stock offering in March 1992.

Apple OnLine Services is Apple's information services business unit and
currently provides commercial information services such as AppleLink and
AppleLink CD to 50,000 subscribers in 52 countries around the world.
