Microsoft Programming Series
The Windows Interface: An Application Design Guide
Book-and-Software Package

Microsoft Corporation has taken the lead in championing uniformity within
and among Windows based applications worldwide. Now these user interface
design guidelines are outlined in a new book-and-software package called
THE WINDOWS INTERFACE: AN APPLICATION DESIGN GUIDE, from Microsoft Press.

"This guide will help developers create user interfaces that are consistent
with the Microsoft Windows interface definition," said Sherry Richardson,
User Interface Marketing Manager at Microsoft. "These recommendations and
guidelines will put a familiar, intuitive face on applications regardless
of functionality. Programmers at all levels using a host of development
tools will turn to this valuable reference to develop successful
applications."

The book begins with a description of interface design basics--user
control, directness, consistency, clarity, aesthetics, feedback--before
moving on to a detailed discussion of recommended standards. These
standards cover mouse and keyboard input elements and the major elements
of the Windows user interface, such as windows, menus, and dialog boxes.
Design guidelines for the pen interface, object linking and embedding
(OLE), the help system, and customizable interfaces are also covered. A
comprehensive index helps readers quickly locate information on any topic
in the book.

The accompanying software includes several valuable development tools:

* Interactive Design Guide--A sample application that provides access to an
online version of the text

* Visual Design Guide--Descriptions, specifications, and online
illustration of Windows design elements

* Buttons & Cursors--A ready-to-use dynamic link library with standard
cursor and toolbar button images

Microsoft Windows operating system version 3.1 or later and color VGA or
better resolution are required. The book includes two 1.44-MB 3.5-inch
disks and ordering information for two 1.2-MB 5.25-inch disks.

THE WINDOWS INTERFACE: AN APPLICATION DESIGN GUIDE is part of the family of
Microsoft products designed to help developers create user interfaces that
are consistent with the Windows interface definition. These products
include a Microsoft University course on user interface design and the
forthcoming The GUI Guide from Microsoft Press, a terminology reference
that provides user interface terms in 13 languages.
