Central Point Incorporates Adaptec's I/O Operating Environment into Central
Point Backup

BEAVERTON, Ore.--Oct. 5,1992--Central Point Software, Inc. and Adaptec
today announced that they have signed an agreement that provides Central
Point with Adaptec's software I/O operating environment, consisting of the
Advanced SCSI Programming Interface (ASPI) managers for DOS and Windows.
As part of Central Point's concerted effort to provide the most complete
range of device support in the backup business, the ASPI managers have
been incorporated into Central Point Backup 8.0, which is included in the
new release of Central Point's popular integrated utility package, PC
Tools 8.0, also announced today.

Over the past few years, hard disk drives have become significantly larger,
resulting in an increased volume of data stored by users. This has led to
a growing demand for higher performance backup systems. As a result of
this demand, sales of SCSI backup devices, such as DAT and 8mm tape
drives, are growing at more than 55 percent, according to Michael L.
Peterson, president of Peripheral Strategies, Inc.

In addition to Adaptec being a leading SCSI host adapter manufacturer, the
company's ASPI technology has become an industry standard for
communicating with virtually any SCSI device. ASPI acts as the necessary
software interface between applications and the software I/O operating
environment, enabling SCSI host adapters to communicate with a wide
variety of peripherals. By incorporating Adaptec's ASPI technology into
Central Point Backup, users are able to work quickly and easily with all
Adaptec host adapters, including their 1510, 1520, 1540, 1640 and 1740
products.

"This is a strategic move for Central Point," said David Roux, senior vice
president of marketing at Central Point. "In an effort to expand support
for our customers, who are increasingly using more powerful computers and
demanding higher performance backup systems, we chose to align ourselves
with a company that not only understands the market, but also the
associated challenges. This agreement is just one more indication that
Central Point is embracing the standards for today's personal computer
users."

"We are very pleased to have entered into an agreement with Central Point,"
said Greg Jones, director of marketing at Adaptec. "With increasing need
for highly sophisticated backup applications, Central Point's support for
SCSI technology combined with their user-friendly interface make an ideal
solution for today's DOS and Windows users."
