SAN MATEO, CA, September 8, 1992--Beginning with its November issue,
Computer Buying World, recently acquired by InfoWorld Publishing Company,
will be published under the name InfoWorld Direct, InfoWorld chief
executive officer Bob Metcalf announced here today.

Retaining its profile as a monthly magazine that serves the rapidly-
expanding direct distribution segment of the personal computer market,
InfoWorld Direct will also maintain its own editorial staff under the
direction of editor-in-chief George Bond. The publication~s editorial
operations will remain in the Wakefield, Massachusets offices they
occupied under the Computer Buying World name.

"The changes we're making will br readily apparent in our November issue:,
said Bond. 'In addition to changing our name to reflect our alliance with
InfoWorld, we'll be expanding to tabloid size while keeping a glossy,
magazine-style cover with photography, art, and cut lines. In short,
InfoWorld Direct will feature a magazine look in a tabloid size.

"We'll also be carrying hardware and software evaluations based on research
conducted in InfoWorld's San Mateo-based Test Center." Bond continued.
"Selected from the widely trusted product reviews and comparisons
published in InfoWorld and re-edited for our readers, this material will

studies, product news, and columns by corpor

InfoWorld Direct will maintain its controlled circulation of 100,000
subscribers who qualify to receive the publication on the basis of making
frequent volume purchases from direct marketers of personal computer
products. The monthly's circulation will be managed by InfoWorld's
circulation department. InfoWorld is a controlled- circulation newsweekly
whose 205,000 subscribers qualify based on their budget and purchasing
authority for their companies' personal computer and networking resources.

Explaining the differences between the two publications, InfoWorld
editor-in-chief Stewart Alsop observed, "InfoWorld is a weekly newspaper
for information systems professionals. InfoWorld Direct does not
explicitly serve that same audience, although many of its readers do work
for IS departments.

"As a group, direct-channel buyers of computer products encompass a wide
range of business types, job titles, functional areas, and company sizes,"
Alsop continued. "The InfoWorld Direct reader is a premier member of that
group, buying in volume directly from vendors frequently but not
exclusively."

InfoWorld Publishing Company is owned by International Data Group (IDG),
the Boston-based international publishing and research giant. With more
than 185 newspapers and magazines in 60 countries, plus worldwide computer
industry research and exposition management subsidiaries, IDG has annual
revenues of $770 million and 4,600 employees
