The Microsoft Visual Basic for MS-DOS Workshop

A Productivity Tool for Programmers Using Visual Basic Creating
Applications for MS-DOS

A new product designed to boost productivity for Microsoft Visual Basic for
programmers who use MS-DOS has been unveiled by Microsoft Press. The
MICROSOFT VISUAL BASIC FOR MS-DOS WORKSHOP is a one-stop source of
imaginative and useful Visual Basic forms and routines for use in Visual
Basic for MS-DOS-based applications.

This one-of-a-kind book and software package by John Clark Craig combines
an example-packed introduction to the Microsoft Visual Basic event-driven
programming system with a comprehensive collection of more than 50
predeveloped programs for Visual Basic. The programs on disk are ready to
be run as stand-alone applications for MS-DOS or to be integrated into
future programming projects.

For example, the author steps readers through the development of a form
that requests a password from the user and then hides each typed character
with an asterisk. Other useful forms include FILEVEW, which can be used to
display any text file; PCTBRDEM, which graphically represents the
percentage of a task completed; and PROFDEM, a program that writes and
reads profile strings.

An example application synchronizes the computer's clock with an atomic
clock in Denver, Colorado, using a modem and a handful of the Visual Basic
for MS-DOS serial communications functions. Other applications demonstrate
advanced techniques such as MDI programming, using huge arrays, calling
BIOS, using MS-DOS interrupts, and creating custom controls. Scores of
screen savers and graphics applications, time and date forms, and other
reusable routines make learning Microsoft Visual Basic for MS-DOS an
enjoyable and rewarding experience.

An IBM PC or compatible using an 8088 or higher microprocessor with 640 KB
of memory running MS-DOS version 3.0 or later operating system is
required. A Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device is Recommended
but not required. The book includes one 1.44MB 3.5-inch disk and ordering
information for two 1.2-MB 5.25-inch disks.
