SunSoft Adopts DPT'S 32-bit SCSI Technology
Solaris 2.0 on x86 Supports SmartCache Plus SCSI Controllers

September 22, 1992 -- Maitland, Florida - Distributed Processing Technology
(DPT), a leading manufacturer of SCSI peripheral controllers, has
announced that support for its 32-bit EISA SCSI controller is included in
SunSoft's Solaris 2.0 on x86 operating system. The operating system is
being demonstrated by SunSoft using DPT-equipped 486 computers at this
weeks UNIX Expo in New York.

The enhanced 32-bit SCSI driver embedded in the Solaris 2.0 on x86
operating system was co-developed by DPT and SunSoft over the past several
months. The Early Access release of Solaris 2.0/x86 with the DPT driver is
now available to developers.

Both companies recognized a need to develop a disk I/O subsystem that would
be able to keep pace with the dramatic increase in CPU speed and allow
users to take full advantage of the powerful graphical interface of
Solaris 2.0. The DPT SCSI driver embedded in Solaris 2.0/x86 is tuned to
take advantage of the unique capabilities of both the operating system and
DPT's advanced controller architecture. The performance, functionality and
reliability of the disk subsystem in Solaris 2.0/x86 is evidence of the
success of the joint development effort.

"Our objective was to develop a fully integrated driver that took advantage
of all the features of the SmartCache Plus SCSI controller and the Solaris
2.0 operating system," said David Race, vice president of marketing at
DPT. "And the resulting device driver and controller combination does just
that, it is a disk I/O subsystem that provides the performance needed to
harness the power of the fastest x86 processor; the scalability needed to
configure the disk subsystem to meet the needs of today's varied computing
environment--from workstation to server; and the reliability necessary for
mission-critical applications," he added.

Key Driver Features

* An integral flow control mechanism tailored to the DPT
controller that maximizes DPT's onboard cache capabilities
* Separate read and write command queue management technology
which allows for maximum efficiency in managing multiple
  disk I/O requests
* Multiple overlapping command support provides for enhanced
management of multiple disk drive configurations
* An automatic cache flushing mechanism provides for
sophisticated hardware and software cache management,
  improving robustness and reliability

SmartCache Plus SCSI Features

* Advanced, dual data path architecture
* Support for Fast SCSI-II devices -- increases transfer rate
from 5 megabytes per second to 10 megabytes per second
* Optional hardware disk caching module can be added to the
  basic controller
* Disk fault tolerance added via a plug-on RAID 1, or disk
  mirroring, module

DPT Corporate Background

DPT is a privately held company founded in 1977. Corporate headquarters are
near Orlando, Florida with a government sales office in Annapolis, MD,
European sales offices located in Milton Keynes (London), England and
Penzberg (Munich), Germany. DPT manufactures intelligent peripheral
controllers for microcomputer. DPT's technology innovations include the
first caching disk controller for the PC, the first softare-independent
RAID solution for the PC and the first cache-convertible controller for
the PC. The company's SmartCache Plus EISA controllers have taken the lead
in the market for 32-bit SCSI controllers. Price/performance superiority
and industry standard compatibility have made SmartCache Plus EISA the
SCSI adapter of choice for manufacturers such as AST, Dell, Intel,
NCR/AT&T, NEC, Wang, Wyse, Siemens and others. DPT controllers are sold
worldwide through a network of major distributors and OEMs.
