Software Publishers Association Tops 1,000 Members

October 27, 1992 (Washington, DC) The Software Publishers Association (SPA)
announced today that it just reached a milestone in membership, and now
represents over 1000 companies. Its domestic and international members
include the leading publishers in the business, consumer and education
software markets. The SPA also represents non-publisher companies involved
in the PC software market in a variety of capacities, ranging from
hardware manufacturers and disk duplicators to software marketers and
localization firms.

Established in 1984 with 25 companies, the SPA has grown steadily in
membership numbers (see attached chart) and in services offered to its
members. Organization services include lobbying and litigation on
intellectual property rights, industry research, government affairs
activities, publications and conferences, as well as a wide variety of
programs specific to firms in a variety of software markets.

The SPA has prospered under the guidance of Executive Director Ken Wasch,
who was instrumental in bringing together the original members to support
the needs of an emerging PC software industry. According to Wasch, "More
than ever, the SPA is now positioned to represent a wide constituency of
players in the PC software industry on issues of national and
international interest."

Also according to Wasch, "The SPA remains committed to growing and changing
with the industry. We embrace new computing technologies so that we can
effectively serve the software community both today and tomorrow."

The Business section of the SPA has a variety of companies ranging from
small startups to very large corporations including Microsoft, Borland,
Lotus, and WordPerfect. The Consumer Section consists of publishers of
consumer games, recreation software, and home productivity programs. It
includes such companies as Interplay, Maxis, Broderbund, America Online,
Intuit, and Sierra On-Line. Member companies publishing software for the
K-12 and higher education markets join the Education Section. Current
members include The Learning Company, Jostens Learning Corporation,
Scholastic Software, Davidson & Associates, and EduQuest.

The Software Publishers Association is the principal trade association of
the PC software industry. Its 1000 members represent the leading
publishers in the business, consumer, and education markets. The SPA has
offices in Washington, DC, and Paris, France.
