MULTI-TECH ANNOUNCES LAN GATEWAY FAX SOFTWARE

SAN DIEGO, Calif., September 22, 1992--Multi-Tech Systems, Inc., a leading
manufacturer of data communications equipment, announced today a new
version of its MultiExpressFax (MEFAX) software. MEFAX 3.0 enables any
Interrupt 6b-compatible asynchronous LAN gateway to operate as a fax
server.

According to Raghu Sharma, company president, "Fax capabilities are being
added to data modems throughout the modem industry. That means dial-up
gateways to LANs, which require modems, will only be using half of their
capabilities if the gateway does not handle fax communications. What is
needed is networked fax communications software that operates just like
networked data communications software. Our new release of MultiExpressFax
meets this requirement. It will turn any asynchronous communications
gateway that utilizes Interrupt 6b into a data and fax gateway."

The new version of MultiExpressFax allows LAN users two ways to send and
receives fax documents. First, as a network fax program, a user can
reserve a modem via the gateway software and send or receive faxes just as
if the modem was attached directly to the PC.

In addition, faxes can be sent or received via the "server" option in the
package. As a fax server, MultiExpressFax runs on a non-dedicated LAN PC
which sends and receives faxes as required through available modems on the
gateway. A non-dedicated PC runs a TSR (Terminate Stay Resident)
background program that enables the server to perform fax send/receive
functions on behalf of all other network users. The client portion of the
software runs on user workstations across Novell Netware, 3Com, and
Microsoft LAN Manager networks. For optimum productivity, both client and
server can run a different application in the foreground.

MEFAX now provides both global (shared) and local (personal) phone book
capabilities, as well as two security levels (Administrator and optional
Rank and File Passwords). Clients and server can run MEFAX menus. Users
can send faxes and view and print received faxes. The server has the same
capabilities in addition to the control and monitoring of all network fax
operations.

In addition to managing the Network Fax Directory and monitoring and
controlling fax operations, the administrator is responsible for the
following: Set up, modify, and update network configuration; install
client software and establish procedures for exchanging information with
the server; create, maintain, and manage user accounts; route incoming
faxes to respective users; manage and maintain a global phone book
available to all network users; monitor network efficiency.

The new MEFAX, which currently works exclusively with Multi-Tech's
MultiModems, will sell for a limited time at an introductory price of $49,
and will be available for shipping later this quarter. At a future
release, the cost will increase substantially, and the software will work
with all Class 2 modems.
