Central Point Broadly Distributes Free Virus Detection Solution

BEAVERTON, Ore.--Oct. 12, 1992--Reinforcing its pledge to make all PCs
"Virus Free by '93," Central Point Software, Inc. today introduced a new
product, Central Point Anti-Virus Scan-Only System (CPAV-SOS), an
easy-to-use anti-virus program that enables users of DOS-based personal
computers to scan their systems for virus infection. The program is
distributed free of charge to individuals through Central Point's Bulletin
Board Service (BBS), CompuServe and other BBSs and online services.

"It is extremely unfortunate, but computer users are dangerously
vulnerable," said Chuck Boesenberg, chairman and CEO of Central Point. "We
feel it is our corporate responsibility to make this utility widely
available, fully supported and free of charge. We need to do all we can to
help people avoid a computer virus disaster."

CPAV-SOS is available immediately for downloading directly from the Central
Point BBS, (503) 690-6650, or by accessing the CPS Forum on CompuServe
(Type "GO Central"). After downloading the program, individual users may
make unlimited copies of the scan program, and use it freely for virus
detection. Corporate and government users are encouraged to contact
Central Point Software or their preferred resellers for anti-virus
solutions and program licenses more appropriate for their environments.

CPAV-SOS uses the same virus detection engine as Central Point Anti-Virus
for DOS. The products also have identical, intuitive user interfaces, a
benefit to users who do not want to work at the command-line level.
CPAV-SOS was designed to solve the first, important step in attacking
viruses--detecting them. Then, if CPAV-SOS detects a virus, customers have
two options: they can delete the infected file and restore the file from
either the backup or original diskette, or they can use a copy of the
full-featured Central Point Anti-Virus for DOS product to eliminate the
infection and to provide ongoing protection against reinfection.

CPAV-SOS detects more than 1,300 viruses. Since new viruses are created and
unleashed regularly, Central Point Software will upgrade and enhance the
free scanning program monthly to detect any new viruses.
