Central Point Delivers First Integrated Anti-Virus Solution for NetWare
Networks

Provides Continuous Virus Management for Clients and Servers Across the PC
Enterprise

BEAVERTON, Ore.--Oct. 12, 1992--Backing up its commitment to protect all PC
users anywhere in the enterprise from virus disasters, Central Point
Software, Inc. today announced Central Point Anti-Virus for NetWare, a
member of the company's Continuous Virus Management initiative, that
provides complete and flexible virus protection for Novell NetWare 3.11
networks. (See attached chart.) Central Point Anti-Virus for NetWare
includes server protection with real-time scanning capabilities in a
NetWare Loadable Module (NLM) developed by Central Point, as well as
integration with desktop systems that are protected by Central Point's
other anti-virus products. This seamless integration between multiple
servers and desktops on the network is provided by a new technology from
Central Point called CentralTalk, enabling desktops and servers to
transparently communicate critical virus information to each other from
anywhere on the network.

"Novell is pleased to support Central Point in its effort to help ensure
virus-free networking for NetWare customers," said Jan Newman, executive
vice president of Novell's NetWare Systems Group. "The availability of
such comprehensive, integrated anti-virus products will further the growth
of the network computing industry."

"Let's face it, we are at war with viruses," said Srivats Sampath, director
of product marketing, Network and Security Products Group at Central Point
Software. "The battle to keep the desktop safe looks like a minor skirmish
compared to the destruction that can occur when viruses spread on a
network. We must defend the network on the server as well as on the
desktop and we must do this continuously."

Backed by Central Point's full arsenal of service and support programs and
network consultants, Central Point Anti-Virus for NetWare provides
integrated virus protection for the PC enterprise, using the same robust
anti-virus engine design for all anti-virus desktop and server products.
Of particular benefit to network administrators is the ability of the
anti-virus NLM to immediately detect and report virus infections across
the network through a centrally managed console.

In general, Central Point Anti-Virus for NetWare contains:

** A server protection NLM that provides real-time scanning of all files as
they are sent to, or retrieved from, the server.

** A master NLM that enables multiple, linked servers to communicate with
each other when a virus is detected.

** Desktop protection packages: Central Point Anti-Virus for DOS, which
protects both DOS and Windows desktops, and Central Point Anti-Virus for
Macintosh.

** A centralized administration program for easy enterprise-wide
administration from a single DOS-based or Windows-based console.

Three-tiered Defense for Network-wide Protection

Virus infections typically enter the network through a personal computer,
making the desktop a primary focus for virus protection. Once introduced
into a networked environment, viruses propagate rapidly through server
communications and can infect multiple workgroups and remote branches of
an organization.

For complete security, servers must have their own protection, since
servers can be infected by any of the local and remote PCs that have
access to them through the network. It is not uncommon for corporate
environments to support a thousand or more PCs, increasing the risk that a
virus may "sneak" into a network server from an e-mail system or
unprotected desktop somewhere in the wide area network (WAN) system, and
then spread very quickly through the enterprise. As a result, Central
Point Anti-Virus for NetWare provides three simultaneous lines of defense
against viruses to provide complete protection:

** At the desktop level, to prevent initial entry of a virus into the
system.

** At the network level, through the server protection NLM, to prevent a
virus from entering the local area network by infecting a server.

** At the enterprise level, via the master NLM, to prevent propagation of a
virus throughout the local area network and the entire enterprise.

CentralTalk Integrates Anti-Virus for the PC Enterprise

CentralTalk, a communications protocol developed by Central Point, allows
clients and servers on the network to communicate automatically and
continuously. CentralAlert, an active notification system built on
CentralTalk, was also announced today, and offers the most complete and
configurable notification system available, alerting a network
administrator of a virus attack, wherever he or she may be.

CentralTalk will be included in all Central Point Anti-Virus products,
starting at the server level in Central Point Anti-Virus for NetWare, and
at the desktop level in the new Version 1.4 of Central Point Anti-Virus
for DOS.

Continuous Virus Management for All Desktops and Servers

Central Point Anti-Virus for NetWare provides Continuous Virus Management
for servers and desktops on the network. It performs real-time scanning of
all files as they are copied to and from the server. In addition, Central
Point Anti-Virus for NetWare can be configured to scan files on demand at
prescheduled times or at specified intervals. When a virus is detected,
cleaning and removal is performed locally at the infected desktop or
server. When a virus is detected on either a server or a desktop,
CentralTalk will alert all servers on the network of the infection. Then,
by utilizing the CentralAlert technology, Central Point Anti-Virus for
NetWare can automatically send a custom alert to the LAN administrator's
workstation or pager or a network-wide alert to all network users. The
administrator can distribute new virus signatures throughout the
enterprise from the master NLM. All virus detection, network-wide alerts,
virus signature updates and CentralTalk communications happen
automatically without user intervention or interruption of the work flow.
Except for receiving virus alerts authorized by the system administrator,
users remain undisturbed and are unaware of anti-virus activities on the
network.

Centralized Administration Makes Enterprise Protection Easy to Manage

Central Point Anti-Virus for NetWare supports centralized management,
performed through an administrative control program that is provided in
both DOS and Windows versions. The control program provides an easy,
intuitive user interface for network installation, setup and
administration using point-and-click operations with icons for all
servers, and support for managing servers individually or by groups
throughout the enterprise in a single step. All administration can be
performed remotely, without the administrator ever having to go to the
servers.

Pricing and Availability

Central Point Anti-Virus for NetWare will be available in November from
major software distributors and resellers in North America for a suggested
retail price of $1,199. The package includes a single-server license, and
a five-user license for any mix of Central Point Anti-Virus for DOS and
Central Point Anti-Virus for Macintosh. Additional desktop licenses may be
purchased singly or in multi-paks.
