SOFTWARE FOR MULTI-TECH'S INTELLIGENT MODEM RACK ENHANCES SECURITY,
FLEXIBILITY

MOUNDS VIEW, MINN., September 22, 1992--Multi-Tech Systems, Inc., a leading
manufacturer of data communications equipment, announced today additions
and enhancements to its MultiModemManager dial-up network control system
software. A new software module, Callback Security Database, allows a
network manager to create a database of users with user IDs and passwords
for enhancing network security. Also, the Statistical Analyzer now
provides dBaseIII formatted output for specializing reports in a standard
format that can be used by Excel, Paradox, and other relational database
managers (RDBMs) running on personal computers. The user interface now
includes a "tool bar" and a specialized status bar that provides easier
access to certain operations and information.

According to Raghu Sharma, President of Multi-Tech Systems, Inc.: "With the
availability of dBaseIII formatted data, users have the option of creating
reports in exactly the form they need. The fact that the reports can be
generated by any PC lends itself to creating them on a LAN connected PC.
By equipping the MultiModemManager's system console PC with the
appropriate Network Interface Card, it could become a node on any LAN.
This, in turn, makes the dBaseIII data also available on the LAN, so that
any other LAN PC could access the specialized reports through the proper
software (i.e., Excel, Paradox, etc.)."

The new Callback Security Database is the network manager's tool for
providing a secure network and ensuring user accountability, while
maintaining effective user access for hundreds of users - - from a single
PC. The network manager can set up and modify a "grid" containing the date
and time that each user may access the network. With control of the valid
date, valid time, start and expire date and time, the number of incorrect
ID attempts per call, the maximum number of incorrect ID attempts per day,
the manager effectively "regulates" user access to the network. For
instance, if modem maintenance is scheduled for the weekend, the user's
valid date and time can be adjusted to disallow any calls on Saturday and
Sunday, then automatically resume normal operations on Monday.

The "Tool bar" user interface format gives a new "look and feel" to the
software for added comfort and compatibility. This user interface follows
Windows API conventions, so network managers will gain ease-of-use through
the placing of common functions on the tool bar. Also, a status bar is
maintained to keep the network manager up-to-date on the status of the
system.

Available for shipping in November, the new software is part of the
standard MultiModemManager system at no additional cost. The
MultiModemManager system, released in February of 1992, consists of 14.4K
bps MultiModem cards (3 modems per model MT1432MR card), a modem rack
(model CC4800) for housing up to 16 modem cards, a rack controller (model
MR4800) for modem management (and now, security), a power supply (model
PS4800), and system software that runs under Windows 3.1. An optional
second power supply for redundancy also is available. A starter rack
system, without modem cards, is priced at $4899, and a modem card with
three V.32bis/V.42bis modem costs $2999.
