TRUMBULL, CT, July 20, 1992 -- Preferred Systems, Inc. (PSI) today
announced the availability of PSI:OrigenTM 2.0 (Origen). The new version
has features specifically targeted at the burgeoning upgrade and network
documentation marketplaces. These complimentary features, combined with
the already existing configuration abilities of the product, significantly
increase Origen's benefits to NetWare users.

"Upgrading is a major concern today for our clients using NetWare," said
Mark Freund, president and CEO of the Interconnect Network Consulting
Group in Santa Monica, California. "NetWare 2.x users are looking at
3.11, and all users are trying to position themselves for NetWare 4.0.
Many times the barrier to an upgrade project is the lack of available
human, rather than financial, resources. Tools that facilitate this
process are critical and provide significant benefits to the networking
community," said Freund.

Among other features, Origen 2.0 provides the ability to:

o Read information from existing file servers into Origen's database
management system. Origen's DBMS enables an administrator to edit and
write the configuration to a new, upgraded, or reconfigured file server.
Additionally, Origen 2.0 can consolidate multiple server configurations
into one.

o Make enterprise-wide changes to users, groups, disk volume
designations, user and system login scripts, trustee assignments, access
rights, and directory structures. Items can be selected by type and
system-wide changes are automated on the LAN.

o Provide comprehensive file server documentation on all NetWare
bindery objects such as users, groups, print queues, and print servers.
Reports can be run in summary or detail mode. Additionally, a table of
contents is provided.

o Handle diverse network configurations by capturing and modifying
user and group full names, user login script contents, user mail
directories, and long group names. Figure 1 depicts Origen 2.0's
capabilities.

Origen 2.0 also has an improved look and feel that is designed to speed and
simplify data entry and modification. Specifically, the new interface
breaks tasks into four major categories: transferring and combining server
configurations, editing and globally replacing information, reporting
Origen database or live server information, and configuring file servers.
A variety of options exist under each category.

Origen 2.0's rights mask replace feature allows security rights to be
examined and reconfigured. For example, many companies do not wish users
to have NetWare supervisory or access control rights. Origen's reports
can help identify these situations, and global replace can be used to make
sweeping changes. This ensures corporate security policies are being
enforced.

During upgrades from NetWare 2.x to NetWare 3.x, passwords have to be
recreated for each user. If done incorrectly, end users encounter an
error message when they attempt to login. Origen automatically creates
passwords randomly, by user name, or by a standard default for all users
at once. These passwords are then written to a log file to be
distributed. This helps the network come up smoothly and relieves a
common headache.

Origen 2.0 also alleviates the redundant and time consuming task of
managing user mail directories. A user's mail directory may contain login
scripts, printer configuration files, and data from a variety of software
packages. Origen compresses these files when the file server information
is read in. It presents the administrator with options to select which
files should be exported or written to the new server. The menu driven
interface saves time over using the cryptic subdirectory names and a tape
backup.

By providing its own database management system, Origen does not require a
file server to be present. Changes can be made in "off-line" mode. Many
upgrades and implementations must be performed at night or on weekends to
minimize down time. This feature allows a large portion of the work to be
accomplished during normal business hours. This also assists a central
location in the support of remote locations.

Free Upgrade To Existing Users

PSI is providing all registered users of Origen 1.2 or 1.3 with a free
upgrade to 2.0. Although the company has a normal upgrade policy of three
months, any user who has ever purchased the product is eligible for this
free upgrade. To receive the upgrade the software must be registered.

"Origen 2.0 has tremendous functionality that addresses pressing needs of
the industry today. We believe it will become the de facto NetWare
enhancement product," said Jack Serfass, president of Preferred Systems,
Inc. "The extended upgrade offer will continue to build on existing
customer loyalty and bring additional word of mouth business because of
the increased functionality."

New Pricing Strategy

The new retail price of Origen is $495 for the first server and $295 for
each additional server. Bundle packs are also available and provide
discounts to large accounts. Origen is available for 5 servers at $1195,
25 servers for $5495, and 50 servers for $9995.
