-- From the Foreword by Bob Supnik, Corporate Consultant and Vice
President, Digital Equipment Corporation

Written by the engineers who developed the Alpha specifications, the ALPHA
ARCHITECTURE REFERENCE MANUAL describes the common architecture required
of all Alpha implementations as well as the special instructions required
to support the OSF/1 and OpenVMS operating systems. The book is required
reading for software developers, system managers, system analysts and
system programmers.

The ALPHA ARCHITECTURE REFERENCE MANUAL is divided into three parts. Part
I describes the instruction-set architecture, and is largely
self-contained for readers involved with compilers or assembly language
programming. Parts II and III describe the supporting PALcode routines
for the OSF/1 and OpenVMS operating systems. Additional appendices
describe software considerations, IEEE floating point conformance, and
instruction encodings. A complete index makes it easy to access specific
architectural details.

Richard L. Sites is Senior Consultant Engineer in the Semiconductor
Engineering Group of Digital Equipment Corporation. He received a B.S.
in Mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a Ph.D. in
Computer Science from Stanford University, and has studied Computer
Architecture at the University of North Carolina. The holder of several
patents, he was responsible for the development of the Alpha processor
architecture and for binary translation technology.
