(Alameda, California, June 17, 1992) Discoversoft, Inc. announced today
that it is now shipping Version 3.1 of TreeSaver. TreeSaver is the unique
software utility for Jaserjet and compatible printers that enables
existing DOS programs to print:

** 2, 3, 4, 6 or more pages on a single sheet of paper.
** print double-sided reports from any DOS program.
** Shrink full-size pages to fit personal organizers.
** Convert multi-page documents to saddle-bound books
   and pamphlets.

Version 3.1 adds the "make book" feature that allows users to print saddle
bound books and pamphlets from any "PCL" print file. PCL (Printer Command
Language) files are files containing the commands to control HP's LaserJet
printers. To make books, TreeSaver reorders the pages into a "first-last"
sequence and prints them 2-up in landscape orientation. The pages are then
folded in half and can be stapled or stitched along the fold. Letter-size
pages folded in half form the popular 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 inch book format while
legal pages create a 7 x 8 1/2 inch format. Both of these formats are
excellent for short run manuals, pamphlets, programs, directories and
other small booklets.

Traditionally, such manuals are created by "pasting up" model pages on
"artboards". The required pagination and paste-up is a time-consuming
process that is expensive, error prone, and requires special equipment and
skills. With TreeSaver's "make book" feature, original boards are made
directly on the LaserJet. They can then be used in conjunction with a copy
machine to produce the actual pages. Of course, original books (as well as
artboards) can also be produced directly on the laser printer by using
TreeSaver's double-sided option. To print double-sided, users feed the
pages through the laser printer twice; once for the fronts and a second
time for the backs. TreeSaver takes care of the pagination, and "throws
away" the pages that are not printed on each pass.

The "make book" function allows the user to enter a variable gutter offset
to compensate for the thickness of the pages. Since the outside pages of a
booklet wrap around the inside pages, the page image needs to be shifted
by a tiny amount (the thickness of the paper) for each page in order to
maintain a constant gutter. This feature is only needed on pamphlets of S
sheets (20 pages) or more.

The "make book" feature includes support of duplexing laser printers such
as the IID, IIID and IIISi models from Hewlett-Packard. On standard laser
printers, double-sided printing is done via "batch" or "manual flip"
modes. In batch mode all the fronts are printed before the stack is
flipped over. All the backs are then printed in a second pass. In manual
flip mode, a front page is printed on a page from the paper tray.
TreeSaver then changes the paper source to the manual feed slot so that
the back side can be printed immediately by "flipping" the sheet and
reinserting it into the manual feed slot. This process continues to the
end of the document. With the make book feature you can start and/or end
the print job on any sheet so that a single page can be replaced when
necessary.

In addition to the "make book " feature, TreeSaver 3.1 now supports all of
the PCL 5 commands (LaserJet III). Commands such as print direction
(rotate font), print model (patterned, outline and shaded characters), and
other more esoteric PCL 5 commands are newly supported in this release.
TreeSaver is a PCL interpreter. That means that TreeSaver can handle
graphics, soft fonts, and even LaserJet macros. This distinguishes
TreeSaver from shareware and commercial utilities that provide similar
functions when printing pure ASCII files. Of course, TreeSaver also
handles ASCII as well as PCL files. Because not all programs have the
ability to print LaserJet formatted output to a file (PCL FILE), version
3.1 now comes with a utility that enables users to capture LaserJet output
into a file from any DOS application.

Other TreeSaver features include network compatibility, the ability to
force duplex printing on the LaserJet IID and IIID, even from applications
that do not support duplex printing, and the ability to switch the
LaserJet IIISi from PCL to Postscript and back. This latter feature helps
users avoid "garbaged" output because of the printer being in the wrong
mode. TreeSaver also lets users introduce or compensate for binding
offsets in 2-up documents and it allows control over page rotation, page
order, and page stacking for precise placement of text.

TreeSaver is used extensively to condense printouts for database and
accounting listings, and in the legal environment for depositions, court
summaries and other documents. TreeSaver allows users to configure
multiple "virtual" pages on one sheet. Graphics presentation foils can be
tiled six, nine, twelve or even sixteen to a page for audience handouts.
Label printouts can be converted to two, three or four-up format allowing
the use of the laser printer instead of a continuous feed printer. All of
this saves paper and toner. Indirectly, TreeSaver also saves, postage,
courier expense, copying expense, and filing cabinets while adding
convenience.

For those who carry papers into the field, having condensed printouts saves
considerable weight and bulk. TreeSaver's scaled mode allows users to
condense full-size printouts to fit personal organizers of any size.
TreeSaver's scaling factors are configurable in 5% increments. Separate
control is provided for the horizontal and vertical axes so that the
aspect ratio can be controlled for any format organizer. Using TreeSaver
is like having the photo-reduction feature of a copier as a print option
from any application.

For laser users who don't want reduced-size printouts, TreeSaver still can
save 50 per cent of the cost and bulk by printing documents double-sided
in a 2-pass operation. To use this feature, users print their entire
document or report twice. A hot-key (or menu selection in non-resident
mode) selects fronts only and another backs only. TreeSaver "throws away"
the unneeded pages while printing the only correct pages for each side.

Finally, TreeSaver comes with a stand-alone optimization utility,
RapidTransit, that speeds graphics printing on the LaserJet IIP and III
series printers. RapidTransit works by taking advantage of the graphics
compression features of the newer LaserJet printers (PCL level 5). Time
savings of up to 500 per cent for graphics printing can be achieved with
some hardware / software combinations.

TreeSaver 3.1 is being shown for the first time at PC EXPO in New York,
June 23-25, 1992. Discoversoft's booth is number 4712 on the main floor.
TreeSaver (version 1.0) was first introduced at FALL COMDEX, 1989. The
suggested retail price remains $89.95. TreeSaver is available to dealers
from Software Resource of Novato, CA., and is available to end-users and
corporate purchasers through Egghead Discount Software, as well as direct
from Discoversoft. Review copies are available to writers upon request. A
special demo disk is available to end-users upon request.
