Microtek Ships New Transparency Products
The ScanMaker 45t, 35t and the Transparent Media Adapter

May 24, 1993, Torrance, CA--Microtek Lab, Inc., the leader in affordable
color scanning products began shipping today three new transparency
products from its ScanMaker series:

* ScanMaker 45t - the first professional multi-format film scanner priced
under $8,000

* ScanMaker 35t - the second generation 35mm slide and filmstrip scanner

* Transparent Media Adapter (TMA) - Microtek's cost-effective transparency
scanning option for its ScanMaker II line of color flatbed scanners

The ScanMaker 45t

The ScanMaker 45t, the first prepress quality film scanner priced under
$8,000, is now available and shipping with the full version of Adobe
Photoshop for both Macintosh and Windows platforms.

Available through value added resellers, the 45t is the first affordable
multi-format prepress film scanner for graphic arts professionals seeking
quality color reproduction. With a maximum scanning area of up to 5" x 5",
the 45t utilizes a removable scanning frame that offers templates in the
most popular film sizes including 4" x 5", 2.25" by 2.25" and 35mm. The
45t offers a maximum hardware resolution of 1,000 x 1,000 dpi (5,000 x
5,000 pixels) and 2,000 dpi through interpolation with its 36-bit color,
12-bit grayscale capabilities and single-pass color CCD design.

With Microtek's Dynamic Color Rendition (DCR) technology, the 36-bit color
data is reduced to an optimized 24-bit data file. The result is precisely
mapped image data that may be further processed by today's 24-bit imaging
software.

Product Pricing and System Requirements

The ScanMaker 45t enters a class of scanners noted for high quality and
pricing, as high as $20,000. At a suggested retail price of $7999 the
ScanMaker 45t brings a new level of affordability to desktop prepress
scanning. For the PC, the ScanMaker 45t requires an IBM PC or compatible
386 class or higher, with 2MB RAM and Microsoft Windows 3.1. The 45t also
runs on the Macintosh SE30, the Macintosh II series or Quadra Family with
System 6.0 or higher.

Image Editing Software

The ScanMaker 45t comes bundled with industry leading software for both
Macintosh and Windows operating systems. The 45t ships with Adobe
Photoshop, the most powerful image processing and color separation
software.

For the PC the ScanMaker 45t is TWAIN compliant. Microtek's TWAIN for
Windows Scan Module allows direct scanning into any image editing, word
processor, spreadsheet, database or other application supporting the
standard TWAIN protocol. The ScanMaker Plug-In 2.5 for Adobe Photoshop is
included for Macintosh systems. Both are easy to install and well stocked
with features. Users can zoom into a full color Prescan to make precise
adjustments to the scanning frame or click on the Automatic Contrast
Control to automatically optimize the contrast of scanned images for
greater clarity and depth.

Both Macintosh and PC models of the ScanMaker 45t include Microtek's Custom
Calibration Utility. This utility software includes an industry standard
transparency target to build a customized calibration profile for the
user's specific ScanMaker 45t.

The ScanMaker 35t

The ScanMaker 35t scanner allows 35mm slide and film strip images to be
scanned into the Macintosh or PC. The 35t scans full color and black and
white 35mm slides or film strips (positive or negative) in portrait or
landscape orientation. The process is quick and easy. Slides drop in
easily and images are captured exactly as positioned in the scanner. A
special holder secures film strips for precise scanning. The ScanMaker 35t
is a practical computer graphics design peripheral for electronic
publishing or other 35mm scanning applications.

With a maximum scanning area of 36mm x 36mm, the ScanMaker 35t rivals the
most expensive film and film strip scanners on the market. It scans
positive or negative originals in both 24-bit color and 8-bit grayscale.
Maximum optical resolution is 1832 x 1832 dpi and on the Macintosh, 3656 x
3656 dpi interpolated. Interpolated resolution on the PC is up to 7312
dpi. The 35t delivers detailed image quality not normally associated with
affordable desktop slide scanners. The 35t can be used for a variety of
applications from color comps to four-color separations and is designed
for desktop publishing, presentation graphics, multi-media, medical and
other applications.

Pricing and System Requirements

The ScanMaker 35t offers affordable slide and film strip scanning for both
the Macintosh and PC at a suggested retail price of $1999. The 35t slide
scanner is light-weight and compact, having dimensions of 9.84" x 7" x
5.1" (LxWxH) and weighing only 4.85 pounds. The ScanMaker 35t requires an
IBM PC/AT or compatible 386 class or higher, with 2 MB RAM and Microsoft
Windows 3.0 or later. It also runs on the Macintosh SE30, the Macintosh II
series, or Quadra Family with System 6.0 or higher.

Scanning Software

The ScanMaker 35t comes bundled with Adobe Photoshop LE for the Macintosh
and Microtek's PhotoStar, an image archiving and management program for
Windows.

Like the ScanMaker 45t, the 35t offers the same software capabilities for
both PC and Macintosh systems. The ScanMaker 35t is also TWAIN compliant
and includes Microtek's TWAIN for Windows Scan Module for PC systems. For
the Macintosh the ScanMaker Plug-In 2.0 for Adobe Photoshop is included.
The Programs are easy to install and come well equipped with the same
features offered for the ScanMaker 45t.

For Macintosh systems the 35t includes a Colorsync profile to facilitate
color matching. Provided by Apple, Inc., ColorSync is designed to
facilitate calibration of all devices for color accuracy from scanner to
screen to printer. The user can scan in Photoshop and use Microtek's
ColorSync profile as a filter for precise color correction.

Transparency Scanning Option Microtek Lab, Inc. is now shipping its
Transparent Media Adapter (TMA) for the company's popular ScanMaker II
line of flatbed color scanners. The Transparent Media Adapter allows
ScanMaker II flatbed color scanners to scan transparent originals such as
positive color film for publishing, multimedia and image database
applications.

The TMA attaches to the top of the scanner, replacing the standard scanner
lid. As both a lid for normal reflective scanning and as the transparency
option, the TMA when in use, deactivates the scanner's internal lamp while
activating its own overhead light source. The TMA delivers light directly
from above and through the transparent original for capture by the
ScanMaker II color scanning engine. This results in considerably better
image quality than that produced by competitive products that do not
deactivate the scanner's internal light source.

Pricing and Important Features

Retail priced at $799, the TMA is one of the most cost-effective
transparency adapters available. Combined with Microtek's affordable
ScanMaker II color scanner, the street price of the two products together
is expected to be in the $1500 range complete with interface, cable,
scanning software and Adobe Photoshop LE.

In addition to price and image quality, several important features
distinguish Microtek's TMA from competitive products. First is the ability
of the adapter to operate without a separate power supply. The TMA
connects to and draws power directly from the scanner's Automatic Document
Feeder (ADF600) option port. Second, the TMA scans a full 8 x 10 inch
image area. Other transparency adapters are limited to originals smaller
than the popular 8 x 10 inch size.

To use the new TMA, current ScanMaker II owners, depending on when their
scanner was purchased, may be required to purchase a factory installed
upgrade. Current owners should contact Microtek Customer Service at (800)
654 4160 for details.
